Fitted electronic ignition.
« on: June 01, 2014, 05:47:00 PM »
Hi all u Cb750 addicts. I fitted this electronic ignition from David Silvers on the advice of an old friend who has ridden old Hondas since he was a boy. Well I got it fitted about a month ago and have to say it the dogs nuts. No more messing around adjusting or replacing points etc   Didn't have to change the coils pulls like a train. Easy to fit cost £100.the old guy told me he has been running them in his bike for 5 years or so. All good up to now.  Comments pls

Congratulations. Just be careful snugging up those screws because that PCB could fracture if you over-tighten. I guess after your've set it up you can forget about it anyway so it won't matter. Enjoy maintenance free ignition.

Think its a great mod to do , cuts out the weak link in the ignition for not much more than a new points plate

Good point. I hear it all the time about how long someone has owned something and never had a problem but very seldom how many miles they put on it during that time. The failed dyna-s I had in my 550 may have lasted forever if I hadn't ridden it so much. I'm not ridiculing your choice heymak in fact I'm seriously considering going with an electronic ignition for my 750 and the one you picked is one of a couple I'm considering, I just wish there was more long term high mileage data to show how well these units endure in the vibration and heat they would be exposed to.

Nobody is knocking it at least I'm not. I'm just wanting more mileage info to decide which one I want. The failed dyna-s I had has made me ask more questions and being there are quite a few options to choose from like the hondaman, accent, pamco and boyer-brandsen I want to make sure I choose the one that best suits my needs so keep the long term mileage info coming.

I helped my dad put one of these units on his K2. The only issue was we had to extend one of the adjustments slots in order to get the plate to turn far enough to time the ignition correctly. Otherwise it's been good. I think he probably has a few thousand miles on it now with no issues.

Normally this would be a good predictor. In the case of Dyna, the older units had a solid 10 year or more track record. Of course, I bought mine when they went #$%*ty so I got 3 years or 10K miles. I have a PAMCO now and so far so good. I met some Yamaha guys who have been using the PAMCO. Since it sits on the Yamaha up on the head, I guess it can take heat and vibration.

they look to use the stock mechanical?the electronic advance type generally cost a fair bit more.

Why are points the weak link? I like points. My '76 550 has 29,000 miles on it and still has the original points and condensers. If you keep them clean and adjusted and keep the cam lubricated they can last a very long time. How many of you with electronic ignition carry the original points plate with you "just in case"?

Honestly, if you get things set properly on your points, are starting with a system that is not all worn out, keep things lubed, I've never ever had a problem with points. Not Brit, not Jap, not Italian. I still struggle with this aversion to points. Thing is, posts like this get read and guys think that EI will solve all their problems.

Points will ALWAYS get you home, even on a very low or almost dead battery. Most EI's can't say that.

but to each his own.

I grew up with points, I still have my meters and tining lights. I went electronic since it was almsost set it and forget it. Points can fail also. The rubbing blocks have been known to break off. If a condeser fails the points can weld together. At high RPM they can get point float.

Having said all that, those who want to use points are making a rational decision. It is not a good or bad thing.

I don't think they're a weak link at all unless the owner isn't accustomed to them but that of course isn't the points fault. I grew up with points so it's not an issue with me but they did make both my boys scratch their heads when I first tried to explain it to them. For anyone who's having ignition problems and have points I would strongly encourage them to figure out the problem and fix it rather than just give up and buy electronic thinking that will take care of all your problems. By taking the time to figure out the problem you just might learn something and have a better understanding.

I've got a 77 F2 with 37 year old (as far as I know) points/condenser that right now runs fantastic and will start on the first kick on a cold morning so why the h**l am I messing with something that's not broke? Because I want to plus I like the idea of set and forget .........at least until the unit fails which means yes I will probably be having the points plate handy "just in case".  ;)

It's usually older guys who like them and younger guys who look for something better. Points are a weak link as they don't operate when wet, they lose power as they wear and condensors are hard to diagnose when you're out on the road.

Frankly I've replaced points for EIs on 3 boats, two motorcycles, and one sports car I will continue to throw points in the trash on any vehicle I own. And so far so good on my Dyna it hasn't missed a beat in 3 years and ~ 3000 miles but I don't ride my 550 every day. Even if it did go bad I wouldn't go back to points I would replace it with another EI system.

Dave500 where do you get a Boyer? I've never heard of them.

Yes points work but, they start losing effecientcy from the first time you start the engine whereas electronic ignitions maintain the same effecientcy all thru their lifetime
