is one ignition switch better than the other
« on: June 02, 2014, 01:02:47 PM »
Hi there
I have a CB750 K2ish I want to replace the ignition switch.  The switch on the bike at the moment has a round plug on it.
What I am wondering.  Is an ignition switch from a different year model better (built heavier duty).  I can change the plug if need be.

Thanks for replys
Scott

Yes & no
The oem from Honda are better than some of these after market ones. HondaMan speaks of this in his book the contacts are not as robust and don't handle the current as well.

Thanks
Yes I want to buy genuine.   I wonder if the switch is better from one year model to the next.

There isn't a heavier duty switch. It is gonna be an expensive buy

The switch itself if fine, its the connectors that lack capacity. Hondaman/Mark details it in his book. You can upgrade them yourself to flat blade ones.

I had Mark do mine, http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=126735.msg1546135#msg1546135

Thanks Edward
I think I'll go NOS for a K2 with the seat lock included.
I have a couple of plastic boxes of those connectors that Mark used on your ignition switch, so I guess I will change the connector to the type shown in your picture.
I put a NOS switch on the K2 that I'm ridding at the moment but I also put Mark's relay for the ignition switch. So you think that I may not need this relay.

Thanks again mate

Scott, be careful with the "seat lock included" issue. The OEM Honda ignition switches come with the steering lock included. Check on eBay. I know for certain that there's one set available now 'cause I just listed a set.  ::)  RR

I don't know off the top of my head what years are what but there are different plug ends like you said. There are square and round. I don't know if either is heavier duty than the other. The ones to stay away from are the aftermarket Emgo's. They won't stand up to the task.

Gday Ricky Racer
How are you mate.
I need to buy an ignition switch(maybe 2) and one seat lock. I really don't need the fork lock cause I never use it anyway. I realise they will be keyed different.
I'd rather send my money to a bloke who is into these bikes as long as the price is similar to others available (doesn't need to be cheaper. close enough is good enough).
Let me know what you think

Thanks
Scott

No worries. I didn't want to run a relay, that's why I chose to upgrade to the flat ones. The US K2 harness and ignition switch both used those lousy brown round connectors. If you already have a relay installed, you should be fine without the flat blade connector.

I think I misunderstood the op. I was talking about the electrical part I think you meant the mechanical key part.
