Thinking of buying a 1977 CB550
« on: June 08, 2014, 04:15:24 PM »
I have been eyeing a CB550 that I found listed on craigslist.  I went to see it today and it is, perhaps predictably, a little rough around the edges.  The seat is mainly duct tape at this point, the turn signals buzz at you before the start signalling, the cut off switch no longer works, it has a little trouble idling (has to warm up quite a bit before it stabilizes), the horn is silent, and there is just a touch of rust on some of the piping.  The owner claims that the carburetors were recently serviced.  I wonder if it is worth the $700 to $800 he wants?  Considering what obviously needs some repairs and taking into consideration what repairs might be needed in the near future.  I am not the most mechanically savvy person, but I am interested and willing to learn.  Part of the reason I am interested in this particular bike.

Your location and pics of the bike may help greatly determine the price

I bought my 550 for $700 and it had been sitting in a field for 20 years. CB's are pretty expensive out here and the guy was a hoarder who was being forced to thin the heard so he wasn't interested in lowering the price. Nothing on the bike worked and everything needed replacing. The fact that the one you're looking at runs make me say.... BUY IT!!!
