Valve guide o-rings - what do they look like?
« on: September 25, 2006, 05:20:27 PM »
So, I'm replacing my exhaust valve guides, and of course want to replace the o-rings that apparanly are installed forever between the guides and head.

I expected to get them in my Honda top-end gasket kit, but I don't think I did.  They're described as 10x1.6mm o-rings.  Anything magical about these?  I've got them on order from Honda, but thought I'd ask about them here.

I'm not 100% sure I don't have them in the kit - would they just be a standard looking black o-ring?  I've got all sorts of green colored ones, but they're not the right size.

The stock items are very thin, unusually thin for their diameter, green, silicone based.  If your gasket kit is not stock, no telling what they will look like, or even if they will be in the kit.

Why is there never enough time to do it right, but always enough time to do it over?

Strange.  Maybe I don't understand o-ring sizing.  I thought 10x1.6 meant 10mm diameter of the whole o-ring and 1.6mm thickness of the ring itself.  That would suggest a fairly thick little o-ring.

Anyhow - maybe most people leave the old ones in?  New ones are cheap, and will be here in a day or so.  Just tired of waiting on this crap, especially after taking the time to order a Honda OEM gasket kit expecting everything to be there.  Turns out nothing I needed was actually in the kit!  Total waste of time and money.

So chances are I do have them.  Well, in a couple days I'll have 4 more :)  Needed to wait for the valve stem seals anyhow unfortunately.  I had a set of 8 nice ones, but one got crunched one way or another and is deformed.  4 more on the way from Honda.

Still don't get the 10x1.6.  There's no way the green o-rings are 1.6 mm thick.  It will be interesting to see the ones that come from Honda.
