Ducati monster 696
« on: June 08, 2014, 09:30:33 PM »
I'm considering picking up my 3rd motorcycle, A Ducati 2013 696. Anyone here have any experience with them? This would be my every day rider so comfort/reliability would be pretty important. I want something different than a Honda as thats all iv'e ever ridden.

thanks  ;D

I rode a '13 696 last summer.  It is a great commuter bike.  The are pretty reliable since they have been making the 2-valve air cooled motors forever.  The services cost quite a bit when the belts need adjusting or replacing which is around every 7000-8000 miles.  Not a ton of power but enough to have fun with.

They're great bikes. But, save some dough and buy a used one. CL is littered with them from riders who wanted one, then either abandoned the bikes after service fees or stepped up to higher displacement Ducs.

A lot of younger riders don't realize the expense of Duc for servicing and don't budget that into their allowance. Lots of great deals on bikes with less than 8k miles and 35-40% less $.

The one im looking at has 13k miles and is being sold for about 5300. From what I understand the air cooled 2 valves are very easy to work on once you learn the desmo valve adjustments.

Good advice. A ton for sale. Also, join the ducati monster forum. Plenty of info. You might also consider the 796 model.

As far as working on them it's no big deal. Yes, there are some things that require a dealer. Belts are easy and valve adjustments just take time but straight forward on a 2V. Don't forget the tool investment.

Like anything preventive maintenance is the key. I think you will be very happy with either model. I love my S2R 800.

I forgot to mention complete service records and all keys a must. Especially the Red key.

On any used Ducati check for tank swelling. Look where the tank rests against the frame at the rubber bumpers. Ducati replaced tanks for years but that ended on January 1, 2014. Thing is they replaced the same tank so no gain down the road. It was a free tank however.

It was the type of plastic used and since the EPA only allows certain manufacturing chemicals in the US there was no fix. Attracts water. You will notice most new models now have metal tanks. Must of cost Ducati a fortune.

If you are going to use the bike for commuting back and forth to work and out of town trips you might look at the Multi Strada. (many roads) Wonderful motorcycles but get the 996 motor and not the 916. Not everyone's "cup of tea" but highly liked buy owners. ST3s if you want more of a Sport model.

Always go for the "S" model if in your budget. Just my 2 cents.  ;)

Seems like a good price. 2013 model you say?

2013 with a couple of upgrades, bar end mirrors and a full mivv race exhaust which is 1200 alone and adjustable levers. Im getting a pretty good deal I think because we got it in the shop I work at and I would be trading my car straight up for it (I'm getting bored of it and I feel like I need a more modern bike anyways so screw it why not just grow the stable) which is why im asking about the 696, because it's the option available. Also blasphemy aside I want to try riding outside of honda's for a while.

The flipside is a Dealer across town is selling a 1098 s decked out (race exhaust, full ohlins) for 12k and whoof man that is a sexy bike but I'm not sure I want to go in to that much debt but thats the kind of bike people brake their necks to look at ;D

I don't think the 1098 would last long as a EDR but boy It doesn't hurt to imagine   ;D

Well I would say that is a fantastic deal for you. Yeah, I think pulling the trigger is in order. Got to be worth way more than that.  ;)

Any pictures? Color?
