76 cb750 tires.
« on: June 06, 2014, 12:02:42 PM »
Not sure if this is the right place to post this. . I just picked up a 76 cb750 about a week ago and plan on making a brat out of it. I've searched the forums and haven't really gotten a answer to my question which is what size are the tires in metric? From what I've read there is no direct conversion but that a 100/90/19 will fit the front and a 110/90/18 will fit the back. Does this sound right? Will a 120 or a 130 fit the rear? And is it safe? I don't know much about tires but I feel like they're  not something I really want to get sizing wrong on. I ask about the sizing on the rear because i found some shinko 777 whitewalls that i like but they dont have a 110. Also, they're spoked rims. Do I need tube or tubeless tires? And can I buy tubeless tires and use tubes in them if they do need tubes? Yes, I know, I'm a newb.

Another quick question. I read about cb750/k/f/a. How do I know which one I have and what is the difference between the 3? Thanks in advance for the advice!

in 1976 there were three different models.
The K - same classic lines since 1969.  The look changes for the 77/78K model
The F - 'supersport' completely different look than the K.  longer tank, seat had a rear cowl....
The A = Automatic

just google cb750K (or F or A) and see the style changes.
there are good descriptions of the engine and chassis changes thru the years here on the site, but i cant find the page.
others will chime in.

Yes....those tires will work
130 rear is a little fat.  120 and 110 are pretty common.

You have an F model. Longer, more angular tank, different oil tank on there, you would have a different seat and tail but they threw an aftermarket on there. You have one of the unique F-ers that has spoked rim and rear disc, lucky guy.

Run a 110 on the rear, you can fit the 120 but the handling potentially won't be as good. No reason other than "show" to go wider on the stock width rims.

Almost all tires today will be tubeless. You can run a tube in them no issues, they can be a bit more of a pain to change tho because the bead is a little stiffer.

I thought all F's had rear disc vs. drum? I've only seen two and they were both 76's. If you have stock rims (sizes) you can still get good tires that are stock inch sizes vs. metric. I use the Metzeler Lasertecs on my 750 and like them. There's a lot of tire debate here, but you can generally find favorable reviews of the Lasertecs. Whitewalls will limit your options I'm sure. Search for member tango911 on here - I think he has whitewalls on the Bomber in his profile pic. Maybe you can find his build thread and see what he's running on there as a starting point.

All F'ers are single disk rear. That is one good looking stocker. Except for the seat and bars. Please Do not chop it up!! It's worth a lot more stock than any other form. Trust me, Look at what that exhaust goes for these days.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I guess I didn't realize what I had. I got it super cheap so I didn't think anything of it. I haven't "chopped" anything per say but I have put clip-ons on it and experimented with some paint. The seat and the bars were killing me.

As it sits now.

I run a 120/90-18 on the back of my 750 with no handling issues. It's only .39" wider than a 110.

I just took a 130 off the back of mine from the PO. It develop squared off corners on both outside edges even with the correct air pressure. Going into a corner you could feel it drop over that edge NOT good.
Check your PMs I'm sending you one now.

100/90/19 front and 120/90-18 rear will work nicely, it's way to nice to chop up. It's not in stock trim anymore so have fun with paint, seat, bars etc and make it your own but please don't take a grinder to it lol. Find one that's already been hacked up and make a project out of it. I'd say the first year of the F is the nicest, bigger tank, disc brakes front and back with spoked wheels. You get it all and then some.

Good call on not the chop.  A clever eye and planning with some hand fabbing will do more than a saw and welder.

Mantra for customizing I use.  "Easier to change an ugly part than an ugly cut"  Plus, without research easy to make a bike permanently unridable.

For value without being museum rare, cb4 750s are most desired and well valued, second to ye CBX1000

Damn. I really wanted to shorten the rear up but now ill feel bad if I do lol. I spose I could figure out a way to utilize it. There is sort of a make shift looking bracket on the front of the frame. Guy said it used to have a windjammer on it. This isn't stock is it? I haven't seen one with it and the bracket dosnt look too good...

Not stock. Windjammers were just bolt on, take the bracket off.

Your one and only part to cut off with a grinder.
