Who has put a Windjammer on their bike?
« on: June 07, 2014, 12:30:16 AM »
Hi how's it going
I've got a CB750 I'm going to put a Windjammer fairing on.
Any advice or tips would be cool thank you.

One thing I thought of was the fork springs.  If they need a spacer or thicker oil

Thanks for your time

you have to pull front light/ears and side signals...and find a handle who fits..
.so do this before yoy pull the trigger.
..and if you later vill build back..

make the elektric viring so it are easy to make it back...

my first idea ,,vas to drive vinter vith windjammer...and pull it at summer...but it takes a weekend to mount it..so it vent at the attic..for ever...a shame..
i kan not speak english/but trying!!

There are also other older style batwing style fairings that I have taken off old 750's. The advantage to those is they do not have a big major frame bracket to install, they use the stock headlight assembly without modification, they are lighter, less wiring molestation and go on and off much quicker.
If you need one for seasonal use I would look for one of those. If I see a pic of one I will post it up. Think Bates may have been one maker of them.
  Here is a 1971 with one.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/331215811777?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Here is another to get an idea as to the hardware etc.   http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-NEOSHO-Honda-CB450C-B650-CB750-CB-450-550-650-750-Green-Metalflake-Fairing-/270902443694?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f130b3eae&vxp=mtr

I'm getting ready to take mine off for the summer.

4 hose clamps, and re-install the headlight/signals and your done.

An hour's job at most once you get used to it.

If you have a K7 or 8, the turn signal stems have to be cut off first, but you can just angle the headlight ears out of the way without removing them.

No need to worry about the fork springs.

You still need to remove the pigtail from the wiring in the headlight bucket or do you have that set up where you can hide it somehow ?

The previous owner put a Windjammer III on my 1972.  I have no ideal what he did to make it work but I love it.  It sure gets a lot of looks.

Good luck and enjoy.

I just re-wired the vetter harness with a male adapter for the headlight pigtail, and tuck the headlight wiring rats nest between the fork ears. Never had the oem vetter adapter harness, so not sure what it included.

Mine still had the headlight bucket installed with a plastic cover on it. Today I would consider wiring it with original size bullet connectors. I always wondered if a guy could leave the stock headlight in (unplugged) and wire the plug out the back of the bucket. (750  K3)

Had one on my cb550.  It was held on with hose clamps, had bullet connecters, and wired wring.  The PO had some weird vinyl cover for the rats nest, ground off the signal stems, and turned the ears in.  Basically mangled it.

Taking it off was dead easy once I knew how it went on.  Didn't look right on my bike anyway.

Please do this right. ;)

I haven't put one on but I did take one off.

Bought a K5 in the summertime and it was too hot riding with the 'jammer.
Took it off and sold it [practically gave it away] for $50.

I've put on three or four Vetters.  The process varies with the model of both the bike and the Windjammer series, and if the 'Jammer has the turn signals in the fairing.
Mounting instructions here:
http://www.craigvetter.com/pages/vetter_fairings/Vetter-Fairings-main.html

Nice and pretty straight forward if you have the installation kit.   These frame mounted fairings are far better for stability particularly in cross winds than the bar mounted types

Most require front turn signal relocation.  Some allow the headlight bucket to remain.  The Vetter install kit includes a Vinyl bag to house the wires that are in the bucket.   Some bikes allow the upper fork covers to remain.  Some require those covers to be removed.  It always torques me when lazy hackers literally use a hack saw on the original parts, like turn signal stems. It's burning your bridges so you can never go back.  Stupid, imo.

Horns are usually displaced.  The Vetter frame bracket has a place for it.    I set up the 'Jammers so with four bolts and a single plug disconnect, the fairing removes for engine maintenance.  Lowers add to that process some, but they are worth it in the cold climes.

I use set back blocks on the stock bar mounts to move the bars closer to the rider.  This makes it easy to sit up on the bike, keeps the mirrors from mashing into the shield during parking lot maneuvers, and the fairing keeps the air from trying to blow you off the bike at speed.  In fact, you actually get wind on your back pushing forward a little.  This is probably why the wind drag on the whole bike with fairing is better.

You don't need to change front fork springs, unless you pack gold bars in the fairing pockets, or they have really sagged from age.

I put a Windjammer IV on a 74 CB550 back in the 80's.  Still have it.  Same fork springs. Never noticed any problems.
I just weighed one of my Vetters at 18-19 lbs.  The bracket is a couple pounds more to add to that.  I suppose that is of some concern if the rider is overweight.  'nuff said.

Guess I can say with 'authority' that some of those 750 brackets may weigh around 4.78 pounds   ;D   Hate to think how many Jammers I have tried to give away but finally just tossed out  :-X

Thanks for replys
I just bought the bracket off USA ebay yesterday and had the fairing a bit longer.
I will put it on a K2 that I picked up recently but it is not quite road worthy yet.
I'm in no hurry to get it on the road so I can go about it the right and not make reversible modifications.
One thing I noticed on the bike is the gap above the fork ears but bellow the top triple clamp.  Looks to be a bigger gap than on the other K2 so I may need to measure that at some stage.
A fairing will come in handy on a morning like today. Not freezing but cold enough to enjoy a fairing and heated grips.

Do you have the electrical pigtail that plugs into the fairing ?  Think I saved a few if you need one.

ekpent,

I have a CB750 K6 that I put the original Vetter Windjammer SS on in 1976.
I'm finally getting around to restoring the 750 and pulled the Vetter off while restoring/rebuilding.
Noticed when I pulled the connector it was pretty tight.
If you have an extra that would match up I'd be interested.
Feel free to PM me if you think one of yours would work.
Thanks
