I dont think spokes stretch..as in making them looser..
The head of the spoke BEDS into the hub, resulting in probably a better fit and less flexing load on the spoke head.
The actual head bend, and how close it fits the hub, makes a difference too...on the 250 that has problems, they may have selected spokes already made for another model, that looked close, rather than set up bending them for a new model.

Loose spokes...when hit by hard braking or acceleration, move around and experience more shock load...loose to tight..loose to tight...a few Thousand cycles......= extra fatigue..

I think you properly explained exactly what was happening. I don't think loose or tight it would have mattered in the long run.

When spokes are unevenly torqued or left too loose they will fatigue a lot faster because of what '754' mentioned about 'cycles' of stress on them over the long haul.

I know it's good preventive maintenance to keep the spokes tensioned properly over the life of the bike;a truing stand is nice to have to pop'em into when you change a tire.I spray mine every once in a while w/ a lubricant of choice to keep those spoke nipples 'free' & sometimes I'll take a spoke wrench on all of'em and twist'em back and forth and bring them back to starting position just to keep them 'ready' for an adjustment/change or just take up on the lost tension evenly...like a 1/4-1/2 turn on ALL 36 to keep them tuned up.

I like OEM spokes anyday over & above Thai spokes  :)

Well anyway, once I get the bike up on the workbench, I will take some before and after pics... That is when I decide what my plan of action is.

My point was that thai and OEM spokes break in some circunstances, and that I believe lack of tension is not a cause thereof. Breakage occurs when tension goes beyond breaking point, and that happens to a good spoke when overtightened, or to a bad spoke when under normal tension -"bad" meaning "low quality metal".

Anybody here believes his japanese bike has its spokes made in Japan? Would anyone swear to God that Buchanan doesn't have their spokes made overseas? You can have good quality and bad quality made anywhere in the World...

Yeah Buchanan makes most of them to order. So I would say they aren't made anywhere except in house. Anyway, yes, maybe I just got a bad batch of Thai spokes. Who the hell knows. Anyway. What would everyone recommend? Stainless / Stainless. I would also assume that the originals were made by DID like the rim. Anyway, you're both somewhat right. These days it is hard to know 100% what you're getting.

Bad quality spokes break. Good quality but loose spokes break too. Too loose is worse than too tight. You'll see this - if you have one spoke break, the others start popping off because they are not properly tensioned and they start flexing each rotation. Add in acceleration and braking and you'll get BREAKING.

Thanks, its the same prismatic powder that was used all around the bike. Most noticeably the cylinders and head. The biggest hurdle was blasting each spoke and nipple. Its very tedious and you need to make sure every mm of the spoke gets shot. My hands were cramping after about the 10th one. I'm doing 20 at a time. I did do them with the nipples threaded onto the spoke. They still turn freely. I'm sure there are other ways of doing it but whatever. I tried to keep it as thin as possible and I believe I succeeded in that area.
