Dissapearing oil trick
« on: September 19, 2006, 01:04:11 PM »
This is probably discussed many times BUT.
I have just given the CB750K5 a birthday with new oil and a new filter .
I must admitt that all I did was to fill / top the header tank up and not check it apart from that.
(The Bike is in Bits) I managed to start the engine the other day but the oil in the tank is very low indeed.
I was always under the impression that the tank when nearly full it is almost the right capacity .
Once the engine is operational the oil level in the tank then stabilises to the correct height on the stick.
How much capacity does the header tank hold. LTs or Pints, Quarts (UK or US)
True or False?
PS  You can phone a friend

Depending who you talk to :-\ total oil capacity is between 3-4 qts. Safest way to determine the correct level is drain everything, change the filter and put 2.5 qts in. Run it long enought to circulate the oil then slowly add enough to take the oil level in the tank to the full mark. With your K5, you could probably add 3.0 qts to start and then check after running the engine.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Hop on a Honda,

Fill it up till it wets your leg then drain some out - oh sorry that wasn't oil.. :D

Dave,

before you start the motor with only a little oil in it - half fill the oil tank, kick the starter 10 times to get oil into the sump, then check the level in the tank till half full again.

run it for a few minutes then check the tank dipstick - adjust as necessary

Mine tooke 3.5 litres from nearly dead empty - new filter in, engine had been out - sump off - and pretty dry but still some oil was in there...

Thanks for the wit and the facts.
I do have some oil on the bottom of the stick but only just.
me thinks that the oil has stabilised. Maybe, just maybe  I may not have put enough oil in the origional set up when I did change the oil. I have fitted a a new filter also
My main worry was / is IS/ the oil simply running through the non return/ demand valve to the pump.
My engine has been in cooCoon for a month or more due to a liquid over haul and has not been run as much as what it should.
Another question is .
1/ Is it reasonable to say that the oil in the header tank will eventually seep into the sump when not being used for some time. Q2/ how much oil is actually in the engine and then how much is in the tank when its all OK?

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

When I pulled the sump on mine I took out the oil pump and checked the tolerances - and they were ok, I also thought I may have a problem with wet-sumping as the tank seemed to drop, but I checked the valve innards and they seemed ok, after a thorough cleaning and with new oil and filter installed the wet sumping issue does not appear to be a problem at this time. the oil in the tank has remained constant - but the bike has been started regularly over the last few weeks,

sorry about the humour

OIL.
I must admitt I did NOt check the amount of fresh oil I put into the tank origionally.
I had the engine running for 15minutes yesterday with my auxailarly Victa fuel tank and placed more oil in the tank It seems to have stabilises now with a fraction more oil over the High tide mark.
As usuall, it may have been my fault!! dumbkoff!!
