 If you reset the cam just the way it was  written ,  the 1.4T, the cam index mark ,and the cam chain sprocket punch marks, that should be all you need.
The cam check is a 3 way check , 1st the 1.4T Check and the cam index mark level with the head on the front, the cam chain sprocket has 2 punch marks when looking at it from the left side, one mark should be at 9 o'clock and the other at 3 o'clock level with the plain of the head.  Being that it is a 4 stroke, on the 4th revolution  of the indicator at the 1.4T, in a clock wise motion, your engine should be back to where you set it, all of these 3 indicators should show up where they are supposed to be, thus the stars are aligned and all is right with the world.

Dave, it seems that we are wasting our breath with this crowd.  We have both said numerous times that it doesn't matter forwards or backwards.  There is always at least one who will chime in and say that they had/a buddy had a cam 180 out.  It seems never ending and quite often it is the same people.

2 or 4 , it's still going to be in the same place.  Many , many, okay many years ago in high school shop class, my old industrial arts teacher said  here's an easy way to remember how to get back to where you started 2 turns for a 2 stroke, 4 turns for a 4 stroke. For some reason , sht like that has been popping out of my head lately, and I'm still not sure if it makes a bit of difference on a 2 stroke.  It's like when you see something....kind of hard to unsee it I guess.
Trueblue, I took the instructions from the Clymer manual and posted it earlier...it says forward. It may well work in the rear position  but, that is not what the manual states, I do everything by the book. Sorry if I offended you.

Oh, sure ,of course that  teacher would give us bad information, I never liked that old  bastard anyways. Good thing I don't work on 2 strokes. I guess that's why he was a teacher and not a fckin mechanic.

Actually in ANY 4 stroke piston engine engine you can't have the cam 180 out, it is not possible to do.  You can on the other hand have the distributor or injector pump 180 out.  That it 100% possible and has been done many times, then people blame the cam.  The cam turns 180 degrees for every full turn of the crank.  If you think the cam is 180 out turn the crank one full turn and it is correct.

Not offended, was just tired last night and getting a little short on patience.  I realise that clymers say to face the notch forwards, but what irks me is when people who have no clue on how an engine functions start telling people who are trying to learn that they need to pull the cam to fix up a 180 out scenario.  When all they need to do is turn the crank through one full turn.  If people would just pick up a book on basic engine function and have a good read before they pick up a spanner, then there would be a lot less people giving bad advice to people who don't know any better. ;D

you can be 1 degree or 179 degrees out on the cam but not 180!on say car engines with meshed gear drive where you line up the dot to dot,try leaving the crank dot up and the cam dot up?then rotate 360 itll be dot to dot again,dont try this on a holden v8 where you space nine chain links inclusive on the dots!

anyone who didn't know would just line those two dots up?
