Need one spoke....
« on: June 08, 2014, 03:55:10 PM »
Checking to see if any Sohc members might have an extra OEM used spoke.
Inner spoke, shown in the pic below. Light yellowish anodized nipple also.
Haven't tried to get the broke section of spoke out of the old nipple but it might be possible.

Need one. Just broke it trying to loosen it to move the front wheel to the left a 1/4' or so.
All the other's broke loose fine.

Looking for one in good used one to somewhat match the other spokes or I'll have to buy a new set.
Dont want one shiny new one in there. I know, I'm funny like that but I'm sure there are others.

Almost finished with a 6 month refurb (bearings, bushings, clean, polish, on and on..) and really looking forward to getting it back on the road.

Hate these little setbacks...

Would gladly pay for the spoke & shipping.

Thanks, Ken

Forgot to mention, it's a 1974 CB750K4 - 19" front wheel

I couldn't get just one new one. Would have to get 39 more so they all match.
I'm willing to do that, just thought I'd check here for a used one first.

One shiny new spoke would stand out too much for me.

Thought someone here may have a good one after installing new stainless spokes, new wheels & spokes or?

Post in the "wanted" section. Somebody has a spoke for a friend out there. Hopefully get it before the lock breakers squeeze.

Good idea, thanks, I'll do that now.

You lost me on the "lock breakers squeeze". Before or after my time maybe?

Quick way to free a hub is to snip those crappy little spokes away with a big oversize pair of wire cutters/bolt cutters  ;) Get a good pair and you can start a new business.

Yea that is the first thing some people do when redoing a wheel just cut those suckers with the lock cutters aka bolt cutters.

   Got it now..

No need for bolt cutters. All of the other 39 nipples came loose without issue!

Kinda ticked me off a bit when it happened, I was hoping to get my 1970 Triumph on the lift! Need about three weeks (hopefully) on it.

Rebuilt the carbs, new carb boots (ft & rr), new electronic ignition system, new swingarm bushings, new rear brakes & bearings, new tapered bearings on the triple tree, clean / polish everything, on and on..  So close to getting it back on the road

Guess it's a good time to clean and repack the front bearings.

All part of the game.. We all love it..

Wait a minute. 1/4" is a lot (not to mention 1/4' :o)). I see the string I'm guessing you were using to check alignment; are you sure the alignment issue is at the front, and not at the rear?
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Not 100% sure. Swingarm and wheel bearing are new in the back. Rear wheel is centered on the hub. Spacing between the tire and swingarm is different in the back.

Spacing between the tire and forks is different in the front also and the front wheel is not centered on its hub.

That's the best I have to go on for now.

Seems like I saw a blueprint type drawing of the CB750 wheels showing their correct position with measurements but I can't find that.

Had the low (appx  10 mph and lower) speed wobble/oscillation and I could let go of the bars at higher speed without a pretty good lean before. Trying to correct that.

I've researched the subject but any advice on this you would like to pass on would be appreciated.

Regards, Ken.

You do not get a spoke out of a nipple ,you take the nipple off of the end of the spoke.

Do not worry about one spoke being shiny, it will discolor and age quickly.

How many times have you seen a motorcycle and someone says," Look, a too shiny spoke in that wheel!"  LOL..lol

Couldn't you add patina somehow to a new spoke?

You do not get a spoke out of a nipple ,you take the nipple off of the end of the spoke.

When the spoke broke, the remaining piece is contained inside the nipple. I would need to get that piece of the spoke out of the nipple. Mentioned that in case someone only had a spoke w/o nipple.

How many times have you seen a motorcycle and someone says," Look, a too shiny spoke in that wheel!"  LOL..lol

Not really too concerned what others might say or think. Might just be me but I'd see the one shiny spoke and it would have bothered me. Not a concourse bike by any means but it's a really clean, mostly stock original K4. I try to treat it well.

Got the spoke covered. Found a couple good used ones on eBay. Should be here in a few days.

Have had happen to mee too. Rebuilding a wheel and even after applying heat to the nipple, the spoke snaps!

One would think that it doesn't matter much as long as you were going to use new spokes anyway. Problem is that I use to keep old spokes and zinc plate when I have a batch. It's a pity to throw away perfectly usable parts.

I have had uncomplete sets sold for a beer. If I can buy them one by one what I do is to zinc-plate all -even the new one- to match the finish. But as somebody pointed out, one shiny spoke won't stand out long -or at all-.
