CB500/4 racer to roadie conversion/Australia
« on: June 11, 2014, 06:21:33 AM »
G'day forum members

In the process of converting a CB500/4 post classic racer to a roadie (14 years actually!) In fairness to myself the plan was to do some classic club racing. Relationship, children, mortgage and the racing plans were diminishing. A combination of the shrinking of my bollocks and the increasing expense of classic racing further encouraged this decision . Plan B, convert the Ol girl to a roadie. I plan to keep who ever is interested posted with some pics of the conversion. I am a new member and therefor require a minimum of 5 posts before I can post any images.  Thanks for your time. Speak soon.

Cheers

Can I suggest you reply to this then and in so doing allow that magical 5 post threshold to be reached and therefore the glory of pictures to be revealed?
Cheers
Nerdos.

G'day members

I have reached the magic 5 posts, but still seem to be having trouble forwarding the images.
They are in the right format and size, but I'll be buggered as to why they are not uploading.
I'll continue chipping away.

No way, well I'll be F@#$*!

Full fairing has been removed.
I do have one or two photo's of her fully clothed. When I come across them I'll post them as well.
Since these snaps, the engine has been removed for inspection.
What started out as a minor resto on the tank has turned into a little bit of a mission.
I do have some questions and will be in need of advice.
I am also chasing up some parts ie: wiring harness, reg/rec, fuse box, solenoid, ignition barrel etc.
I'll keep you posted.
Cheers

Files might be too large to send all at once.

I'll sort the re sizing for next time.

Nice. I assume that's an alloy gas tank and no baffles on the megaphone exhaust, right?

Alloy tank, check.
No baffles in pipes, check.
I'll need a bit of luck getting her through registration with those pipes!

Nice looking bike mate.  Where abouts in Aus are you?

If you are intending to post a lot of photos start up a photobucket account and use the image code on the right.  It allows you to post as many pictures as you want per post and size doesn't matter ;D.

The inspiration is a feature from an old Two Wheels mag from the 70's featuring a CB750 with a Read Titan CR kit. I've located a supplier who is providing me with a Churchgate full fairing similar to a Rickman Avon fairing (perspex nosecone).

I'm also trying to identify whether or not this header pipe is off a standard CB500 or possibly another MC. Your help or anyone Else's out there would be greatly appreciated.
Here is a pic of the Frankenpipe in which needs replacing. There has been around 5 inches removed from the end. It is from the right side.

Thanks again Cheers.

Those pipes remind me of a MV Agusta exhaust.  I like it.  Any info on the pipes?

Nice bike!!

Cheers Steve

I think they are Magni MV inspired. I understand they were fabricated here in Oz. I have been trying to source some history on the bike to record some history of what has been done and where. All I know the bike was prepared by Bill Smelling for Westgate racing in the late 80's. I have heard Bill is getting on and sadly not in good health. His bike's were very competitive but that's about all I know.

It's been awhile since I've seen stock CB500 pipes but from the pic it looks like a larger OD than those. Double wall but maybe CB650 primary tubes?? Just a wild guess.

Doesn't look like 650 ones, they had a longer straight section in the down pipe.  I have a set in the shed that are pretty much clagged, I can measure the OD tomorrow if you like just to compare because that one looks like it has been heated and bent to that shape, so maybe used and butchered one off a 650.

Thanks Neevo I'm glad you dig it. I can always remove the fairing and keep her naked.
I've been getting into the full faired 70's vibe. A combination of watching Mad Max for the 50th time and coming across a Read Titan CR in an old Two Wheels mag that's inspired this direction.

Trublu I'll take you up on that offer if you don't mind mate. Tomorrow I'll get back to you with the OD and wall thickness on these headers.

Thanks again forum members for your help, advice and interest. Cheers
