Thanks again for the lead. Kev's a nice bloke to deal with.

What are they off and who's responsible for that work of art?.

The kink is very similar and not having the pipes in front of me, I'm not sure if mine are quite as pronounced. But that's pretty much the idea in what I'm after.

Kev mentioned due to the 2 main bends in the pipe, the mandrel bender won't have enough bite to work with to get the kink required to clear the cooler. He sent me to an exhaust mob around the corner and they didn't have a die small enough to make the kink. Be careful because some bending methods can kink the pipe decreasing the inside diameter potentially restricting exhaust flow. Some other methods leave ripples on the underside of the bend which looks s%$!t house. Mandrel bending prevents all of that. Another option is old school and that is filling the pipe with sand and using an oxy. That may be my only option to get the kink required. The heat does tarnish the metal but I think it can be polished out.

I'm planning of paying the Alderton's a visit to discuss the options. I'll pass on the info when I find out.

Laurie Alderton? That blokes a farkin legend too!

What was the kink for? Clearing the oil filter? If so I may just go straight to avoid the hassles and buy a few exhaust gaskets. I am subscribed to your thread so keep up posted if you find solutions to the kink.

Good to hear you're happy with Carrington, nice to spread the word about quality work from a decent company.

Bloody legend alright.

I need to clear an oil filter.

I'll let you know when I find a solution. I should have it sorted before you have yours fabricated.

What pipes are they off in the pic and do you know who's the fabricator?.

Can't find the links now but I'll keep looking. These are the only pics I saved as I loved the look and it was spot on for my 4-2-1 setup:

Been searching for ages and still cannot find anything. They were in a thread somewhere, I think the chap said they were a prototype from a buddy of his.

That pipe is made by Chris Redpath @ Motogpwerks, he was an engineer for Yoshimura before opening his own shop. I have one of his pipes and will be getting another... ;)

Thanks Mick. And also for Dave's lead. He has been most helpful and informative. Looks like I'll be purchasing the crank through him direct. Cheers

ziokahn how did you create the templates for your headers? Had a crack today by cutting up an old header and it was pretty tough getting everything lined up perfectly and symmetrical. Hoping you have an easier way ;)

Neevo I was lucky that I had the old pipes that were fabricated back in the day to give to Carrington to copy. They were made in mild steel and rusted out up near the flange on two of em. I guess I was unlucky that they rusted because that's probably been the main headache in this project. If I didn't have those to use as a template I'd be buggered.

I'm hoping somebody out there could help with some advice. Sorry I couldn't help mate.

Ah, easy to copy then. Lucky! Creating them from scratch is tough and I'm nervous I will get some measurements wrong.

Did you look into this system mate. Can't bolt something like this on or do you need to clear the oil cooler as well?

Have you checked these links out??.

I couldn't get to the exhaust following those links, never been able to view any products on the motogpwerks site (maybe iPad problem) either. I have a 400F so I need to clear the oil filter housing (on the right, front and centre of the engine):

I was going to go for a kinked style header like the pic I posted oroginally, but since you said Carrington cannot do that, I am going for a straight design instead which will make the oil filter inaccessible without taking off the headers, bit of a pain but not the end of the world. Plus I think I prefer the look of straight headers anyway:

Ziochan

I haven't seen your build for a while.

If you're chasing an old school motorbike machining try Ed at Heads Plus in Kingswood.

He did my head, honed barrels and checked my crankshafts. He's excellent.

He used to race cb500s back in his day.

Regards

Mick

Thanks again Retro. Neevo I hope that helps a little mate.

MickB much appreciated. I'll get in touch with Ed and let you know how I go. That's the sort of character I'm looking for.
I'm a member of the Veteran & Historic motorcycle club, mainly owners of British bikes. Every time I attend a meeting, some member is in ill health or has sadly passed. It saddens me that not only have we lost another great person and enthusiast but also their skill and knowledge. Recently an old mate Sid Wilkinson passed suddenly. He was a legend bloke and master restorer. His passion was Ariel's. I enjoyed nothing more than paying him a visit, hanging out in his workshop and listening to his tales. He loved taking the covers of his rides and going over the details of his builds. He's sadly missed.

Not saying that Ed has one foot in the grave but as you described him, couldn't help think of the dying breed of master tuners, builders and restorers. That's what makes the SOHC forum so special. All the skill, knowledge, experience and advice happily passed on and forever logged.

Huge help ziokahn. When do you get your headers? What else were they doing (collars for the ends of the headers)?

Just touching base.

Big shout out to Dave500 for the crank he sent me down and spare primary chain. Dave has been an awesome help. My head was about to explode with the wealth of information. Thanks very much mate for the correspondence, advice, super quick postage and fair price. Thankyou Retro for putting me onto a great lead and introducing me to a great bloke, Cheers.

Tomorrow I'll drop the crank off to Ed at Heads Plus for fitment of the conrods and balance. Thanks MickB for the lead and also the side stand.

Gaskets, solenoid and reg/rec arrived in 4 days from 4 into 1. Super quick shipment from OS.

Read Titan fairing was collected on the weekend from Mick Jones or Tumbi Mick as some may know. He fabricated the fairings from original moulds amongst his vast collection. Another great character. Had a great yarn and could have quite easily spent the day talking bikes, racing and other nonsense. Thanks Mick.

Have also spent the last few weeks following leads forwarded to me via RetroRocket about the history of this CB. Once I gather more, will post some very interesting facts.

Cheers for know.

Heading out to Ed's at Kingswood tomorrow. Will give the lads at Carrington a buzz before I leave. Hoping to take a detour out to Riverstone.
Finally had time to take a squizz at your blog. Man what a huge effort. Massive job. Awesome work mate. I feel embarrassed when I see some of the craftmenship and skill you guys posses.
Can I ask, trying to build a template out of conduit did or did not work for your headers?.
Also you mentioned Dave Mac for Hydroblasting. Your right, awesome work with attention to detail. Awesome bloke with few more engineering skills under his belt. He used to restore bikes many moons ago for a living but know solely focuses on Hydroblasting.
