first start
« on: June 11, 2014, 04:22:59 PM »
Hello. I have recently purchases a cb550k 1977. I haven't heard it run but have been assured it does.I was told the starter motor doesn't work. The engine oil looks clean?
I was wondering if there was a rundown somewhere on the forum of what to check before attempting to start the bike. I was going to put a fuel filter  between tank and carb. also new fuel line as it's old.
Any thoughts appreciated. Mike.

clean fuel, good battery
check blockages(critters) in exhaust and in airbox/filter.
might want to pour a little oil up top(valves) to protect them until oil pressure builds.

....fire in the hole!

Here's what I do everytime:

Take the carbs off and clean them. Thoroughly.  That will eliminate fuel issues.

Clean the points and set the timing.  New plugs.   Squirt a little marvel mystery oil or your favorite snake oil in the plug holes.  Trim 1/4" off the spark plug wires.

Set the valve tappets and the cam chain tension.  Squirt a little oil in the valves while you have the caps off.

Basically, you're doing the 3000 mile tune-up.

The starters are pretty overbuilt.  I'd check the solenoid first - You can put a big screw driver across it and see if the starter spins.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

+1 on Greens answer.  Be sure to use a guitar string on the jets in the card.  Pilot jet and slow idle.  Get the junk out.

Also, if you have the airbox, use it.  Pods are a pain, coming from experience on my current bike.
