76 CB550 questions

If I remember right, isn't this the one year petcock that's expensive?

Are the rest of the parts good for the other 550's?

Im getting one this weekend, and not sure what to do with it yet. lol

Anything that's broken could get expensive. I wouldn't let a petcock slow me down from buying the bike.

There are three iterations of Cb500/550 Fuel valves.  72-74 Cb500/550, 75 and 76 Cb550, and 77-78 Cb550.  Each was an improvement on the one prior in some way.  The Cb750's were improved with the same type fuel valve on the same year boundaries, AFAIK.

Expensive is a subjective term.  Compared to replacing the whole bike or making the bike you have functional, they are cheap.  They are priced on what the sales marketplace will bear and the demand.  The 75 and 76 types are very fragile and are often destroyed by ham hands and others who have no business working on them blindfolded, making the demand go up.

Im seeing a line of crud around the bottom of the tank.  Looks like either been in water or white moss.  I will know more when I get it. 

I am seriously getting this bike for a steal.  I have a tank from a 77 if this is bad.  Just trying to stick to original as possible.

first bike in awhile that actually has a good seat and is complete. lol

and for $100.  Just the pesky title issue

That milky white stuff in the bottom of the tank might be an old "Kreme" liner that's failed. A good flush with Acetone will pull out most any liner and get you to bare metal to assess the true condition.

Regarding your title issues, Thamuz, you could always go the Vermont route. I did for the '78 550K I have. Came to me in PA by way of NY with missing title. Would have been a very time consuming and expensive nightmare getting a PA title. Especially with PA gov bankrupt and offices only open part-time...not that you could tell the diff from full time!

Vermont doesn't title vehicles more than 10 yrs old and will accept non-resident registrations. After getting their reg. (took about 3 wks for mine) you can later take it to your dmv to transfer to Iowa if you want to. Tell them to go to the Vermont website if they question no title. All info and forms for download are at dmv.vermont.gov

That's oxidation on the outside of the tank where the clear
coat has suffered. It can be "refurbished". Very gentle wet sanding and buffing will help restore the lustre

Heck I'd pick it up just for the exhaust pipes.

I do fine with four in ones, but I'd love to get a set of 4 in 4s.

the pipes look decent.  I got another pair though.  I shouldn't say what I paid.  This might be parts, might turn into something else.  The seat and pan look amazing, which is unusual for me.
