Supposedly the 1978 CB750k model has a single brake hose. Everything before (including the 1977 CB750K) has two brake hoses.

Is there anyone with a 1978 CB750k who feels that the factory brake hose is a little too long? When I had factory bars (or maybe they were a little taller, but close), I remember being able to coil the hose a little bit. When I installed my K1 bars, this created even more slack.

Basically, I'm wanting to get a stainless steel hose, but I want to have them trim it before it gets to me. Since I don't want to remove the hose to measure, I'm thinking about attaching a cloth measuring tape to it to see how long the factory hose is, and then determining how short I can go.

Will a shorter hose produce better braking than one that has a lot more slack?

That's a good idea. Just run an ethernet cable as the cable and measure it and be done.

How can I make sure that I'm leaving enough slack? Should I add 1/2" to whatever I come up with? Any tricks?

Flybox: So it's true that the size of the hose doesn't matter as far as braking performance is concerned. But one thing is for sure: a longer hose will need more fluid to fill.

Have a helper hold the 'test cable' where you want it, and turn the bars side to side, and adjust for any binding.

The brake caliper and the master cylinder move together when the front wheel is turned. The only "slack" required would be when the fork is at full extension (the longest point). So unload the front end (jack the front wheel off the ground) before measuring.

Measuring what you need is strongly recommended. I ordered a braided stainless 750 K8 front brake hose that was supposed to be stock length but ended up about 3" shorter than stock... unusable with stock bars. I kept it since I believe there is a K8 in my future with drag bars.

Sounds good to me, it's either smoke or clear. If I can find the invoice I'll know for sure. I'll post picts of what I got, and I'll measure the length to see how close it is to what you are looking for.

I need something optimally at 33 1/4 - 33 1/2".

The one I've got is only 31 inches. Looks smoke to me, there's also dark writing along the length of the hose. Where the writing stops, there's a broken dark stripe along the rest of the length. Got the angled banjo on one end and the connection for the flare at the hard line from the caliper on the other end.

Yeah, it was supposed to be stock length. Got it from Slingshot cycles (forum member pampadori here on the forum). He offered to swap it out for any length I wanted, but I dragged my feet and never got around to it, so I figured I'd just keep it for the drag bike I mentioned. I'll be measuring the next one for the stock bars prior to ordering to make sure I get the length I want, but rest assured pampadori is a reasonable fellow and is willing to make it right if you're not satisfied.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I've ordered a kit for my cb450 and it was great.

But for sure, the factory hose is way longer than what you got! I'll provide measurements to him and get er done.
