'41 Indian
« on: June 13, 2014, 09:32:07 AM »
My barber has been working to restore this for several years. It belonged to his father. His biggest problem was finding someone to 'correctly' rebuild the magneto.. took two tries. He had some of the chrome redone, but otherwise it's original. Love to see old bikes saved and there are just so many V-twins. He told me yesterday he would be riding it into work today, so I had to swing by for a look. Thought I would post a pic of it. It sounds like a small tractor when idling and apparently it pulls like one too.  :)

I love those straight 4 engines. For no other reason than appearance I would rather have one of those than a V twin Chief.

Manificent..  The foursare very cool, pricey to rebuild and have to be very careful who you get to do it.  40 and maybe 41 used teardrop  emblems..  One of the nicest years... Imo..

Pretty sure I can. All I had with me this time was my phone. I'll check with him to see when he'll ride it into town again and I'll bring a better camera.

I had a poster of one of them on my wall when I was a kid. It was given to me by my grandfather, he told me he used to own one just like it. I always wanted one as my first bike :). I wish I still had that poster it faded away and fell apart many years ago.  I was talking to my parents today and we realised it has been nearly 10 years since he passed away, still seems like yesterday I was riding over to his house after school and talking for hours about all his old bikes and cars.

looks like the danish nimbus..750 CC OHC..and shaft drive.
..think they have kombined indian and bmw..all the best in one bike..only one problem hardtail..and low gearing can run 100 kmt...but over that.. one cilender gets hotter.nr 3..got all hear from 1-2 and 4....kolling rips are small..and no oil pressure/sirkulating so heat acumulate in the cylender..but only at high speed driving..

they vas often driving vith sidecar..

I think the Nimbus looks like the Indian rather than the other way around.

Always liked the Indian 4's..better than the V-twins.  Indian bought-out Henderson..which before that was Excelsior..if memory serves me here.
Remember thinking back in the late 50's..that if Indian could figure out a way to cool the in-line 4's better..I'd get one (most of the in-line air cooled 4's were notorious for the rear cylinders over heating on long rides..or in stop and go traffic..which is why police dept's stopped using them after WWII I guess).  My Ariel Square Four also would overheat the rear cylinders in hot weather..on long rides.

Then in '68 voila! The Honda transverse in-line 4's came out.  One reason I've remained loyal to the Honda brand all these years..is due to Soichiro Honda's vision in rotating the engine 90 degrees (the transverse arrangement) to eliminate so many of the problems with tandem and square 4 designs.  Nowadays of course..with liquid cooling..that issue is rendered moot.

Long live 4 cylinder powered motorcycles!

The Sqariel is my dad's dream bike. Unfortunately his Parkinson's and related issues means no more motorcyles or cars for him, for as long as I can remember he talked about wanting a square 4. I don't know why he didn't end up getting one back in the days when he could have afforded one and was still able to ride and wrench.

its all abaut oil cooling.
..if this old dinasaurs  have a strong oil pump and  oil radiator/cooler..they have run for ever.
..cast iron engines dont help on heat transfeer...the nimbus dont have a oil pressure gallery...so pistons and head...build up the heat..there are a pump..but it fills just small resuiar...hvere oil dripps dovn in drilled lines,,,and feed the beerings

if i got one ..i build a copper line vith sprayers to oil cool the inside of pistons...like on modern turbo engines..and a cooler..then it vill run perfekt
