Topic: Old Wiseco's

I've got a set of NOS (1978?) 836 Wiseco's. There's no arrow on the dome for orientation. The dome isn't fully machined, just a 5/8" circle in the center (used for turning?). Two slightly different width valve pockets and the number 1.00 stamped into the dome. Anyone know which way I put them on? I'll be calling Wiseco Monday otherwise. This is supposed to be running for next Friday. Just call me last minute Jon.

Jon, the off set of the piston pin is to the rear. I was puzzled by it the first time I saw a set of Wiseco pistons.

Although you would expect the slightly larger valve recess to be for the bigger inlet valve, it's bigger for the off set of the exhaust valves being away from the center. It saves making two handed pistons, these can be fitted anywhere you care to put them.

The newer Wiseco the smaller cut is on exhaust side. IC soon! Bill

The stamped 1.00 is on the intake side with the wider valve recess toward the exhaust side of the motor. Pistons mounted, circlip wires in, wood cut, waiting for my help who is away for the weekend. Monday the block goes on. It won't have any passes on it when I get there Friday. (And I took Frank's bet??? ) It will take a miracle....

Do 2&3 first, use hose clamps....done it many a time without ring compressors, rather use clamps and 10 fingers, well sorta, rather than 20! Haha.You can be riding tomorrow or at least have engine finished! C'mon man, you can do it!  Bill

No. Consider the valve size vs angle Jon.

No, as stated when I started this posting, the dome isn't machined nor is there an arrow. There is a machined circle at the top of the dome along with a stamped 1.00. The dome is actually a little grainy.

     I'm building this in a trailer. After dark, you run for your life as the mosquito's will eat you alive. I'm racing tomorrow, so we'll see what can get done after the event. Finding the right size hose clamps late on a Sunday will also be a challenge. Not much open for auto parts stores then. Maybe Walmart...

I've posted a pic before. One was in the line of pistons I posted a couple times. I'll look for a pic. I want Jon there and on an Automatic!  It was an old NOS kit purchased from Star Cycle. Remember talking with Jackie, I found a date of 1987 on some paper on pistons! Remembered it weighed 177.xx grams. Just a little roadblock Jon, you'll get it done!  Bill

Pistons are mostly in the block. A couple of oil rings will join them tomorrow. Camera had a dead battery that's now charging. Hopefully pictures tomorrow evening. By then, I'm committed.

Plus state sales tax. I'll take a case; you went to the effort. I've got half a case left from 3? years ago at $3.60/qt. A barrel of oil hasn't gone up much in the last few years, but the price of oil per quart for our bikes sure has.

Camera battery recharged, but the head is already on the motor. I'm lashing the cam tomorrow night; if everything spins the right way, I'm racing it Saturday. If it clunks or binds, it's coming apart (again) and I'll shoot the piston shots that others want. Too tight a schedule for resolving this topic. I went with the wider valve pocket for the exhaust valves on this motor. I'll let everyone know how it goes. Thanks for the responses.

     I'm sorry but the motor has gone together. I tried to take a photo when I was putting on the block but the camera battery died while I was focusing. The next night the cylinder head was on it. I'm running the DP295 cam with a little advance. With stock valve lash for this cam it spins over by hand with no binds, noises, or issues. Since this effort is to race the bike on Saturday this week at Virginia Motorsports Park at the Cup event, I can't go slow building it. I took Sam's advise that the wider valve pocket was for the exhaust valves in their two locations in the motor. All the pistons are exactly the same. Bill Benton has taken a picture of the piston that I'm using in a group piston shot that he's used on the forum a while ago. Bill may be able find the picture and post it here. Sorry, but that's the best that I can do under the circumstances. I appreciate everyone's input. Saturday's time slips hopefully will tell if my educated guess was right.

Could we get a race report?

Bike got together minus it's exhaust on Thursday night. It spins over on the starter just fine. I brought the header and clamps with me to attach at the track. I didn't try to fire up the motor Thursday night since I hadn't purchased gas. (I didn't think that I'd get that far). Got up and driving at 6:20 am on Friday morning. Arrived at the hotel at 9:30 pm in Richmond, VA. About 20 minutes later I found out that Sam had crashed on his first time trial while I was driving down there. Other topics on this forum cover the injuries, the life flight, and the extended stay at a local hospital that Sam is going through. Racing became unimportant this weekend. I didn't touch my bike while down there. I left Monday at 6:10 am and arrived home at 10:20 pm. The drive was "challenging" both ways. Here's the only picture of the pistons that I have:
