lowering options for 78 cb750k
« on: June 12, 2014, 09:07:43 PM »
so as of know i am just really in love with this bike :) each day i look at it the less i want to do. i do still have a desire to lower the rear (pretty much as low as it will go and still be able to put my fiancé on the back) what size shocks am i looking for? and does anyone know how to cut and use the original ones that are on the bike (i really like the older look and don't really want to put shinny new ones on) is it recommended to lower the front as well? thanks

If you lower the rear you need to lower the front, this will keep the handling characteristics the same. Can't help you with where to get lower springs but I'm sure someone will chime in.

Something to think about if it matters. If you lower your bike it could effect the use of your side and center stand! These may have to be altered.

Load up your bike, you, the wife, and all the gear you may carry.
Test for bottoming out.

Lowering by cutting the springs is not recommended as it seriously reduces your shock travel and will cause the bike to bottom out when hitting a decent bump in the road, notice I said when and not if. Lowering should be done by using a shorter shock and spring, but as mentioned it will hinder the handling of the bike from the stock handling.

my parts bike came with a set of lowering blocks on the rear.
I'm resurrecting the parts bike at the moment, and one of the first jobs on it was to remove them!
Pic 1 is the block itself, Pic 2 is approximately where the block fits.

The backend is lowered by moving the bottom shock mount back by about 75mm.

(sorry about the photo rotation)

Lower it and 2 up don't go together well mate, unless you are a midget and can't touch the ground. leave it alone. You will lose cornering clearance, your stands will need to be modified, it screws with the handling over all as these bikes don't have much cornering clearance any way and 2 up you also run the risk of the rear tire hitting the rear guard, you may have to change the rear out to a 16 inch rim and most, if not all lowered shocks are rubbish anyway, good quality shocks are made to enhance handling, lowering the bike does NOT enhance its handling, also, going into driveways and over speed bumps your pipe will bottom out.......... Some things to think about..
