Topic: How to measure valve clearence

Hi
I have a cb 750-k4. In the work shop book chapter 3-4 there is an descripten how to measure the clearence between valve and valve guide. My questions are; Shall I put the dial guide to to the valve-plate or on the middle of the valve (fig 3-48)?

And how high shall I lift the valve to test the clearance?
