Hi y'all! New sohc4 rider from Dallas, tx
« on: June 17, 2014, 09:54:18 PM »
New to a 4 cylinder bikes and vintage in general.
I had a great luck of acquiring this 1978 Honda CB550 Four K.
It sat in the garage (barn) since '94.
Rebuild engine and carbs, few new electrical parts, good cleaning (brass brush chrome cleaning), new tires and soon new seat and pipes.

I love near downtown Dallas. Old east Dallas.

It does run kinda funny between 3-5K RPMs. I've never had a 4 cyl bike, so I'm not sure if it supposed to be like that or not. My other bikes are 2cyl. The power range is at 5-6K rooms and it's even throughout...

Perhaps I should change the coils? Any thoughts?

I've been to Deep Ellem, cool area.

No, don't change the coils! They rarely go bad.  Honda recommends a full tune up every 3000 miles, sounds like you are due.

I think I MAY have seen your bike. I work off Oak Lawn, but head over to East Dallas for lunch sometimes. I think I saw it in a lot at Ross and Hall st. Definitely caught my eye.

As for the funny stuff, I see the carbs have been rebuilt, but how about the points? Ever been changed?

Points been synced. Now the carbs may need to be synced?

It probably was my bike... Do you work there? Let's meet up!

I guess "checked", not "synced". Forgive my ignorance of technical terms. Friend of mine did majority of mechanical work on it, as I'm not super inclined...  I am learning though.
I do remember him turning the crankcase and checking some sort of "timing" and mentioning "points",starting they are good.
So, the carbs sync is what I may need? Is that a part of that 3K mile tune-up?
