Just bought a super clean '78 CB750 for a really good price from a friend of a friend. There is one catch. The bike didn't come with and never had a title. It was previously registered in New Hampshire where they don't give titles for bikes that old and only needed a bill of sale to register it.

Now that the bike is in MA, I'm finding that registering the motorcycle here is close to mission impossible. MA requires a title to register and you can't get a replacement title if there was no title in the first place.

I have a bill of sale and the expired New Hampshire registration from the previous owner. Anybody have an idea on how to get the bike titled and registered in MA so I can get it on the road? Any luck with using a motorcycle titling company? Or having it titled in another state?

both,
Do you know anyone who lives in either VT. or NH.? I think they can help you get it registered, first in their own home state...;you can 'sell it to them' on paper and then they can return the favor, well we'll see what the other members here think... ;)

Have you been to the DMV?

I bought a K2 from NY, came with transferable registration, was able to get a Texas title with no problem.

The girl scratched her head for a minute, went and got the "big book" and I walked out 30 min later with all the paperwork and a plate.

Just tell them NH was a no-title state back then.

Massachusetts positively sucks when it comes to these things...take it from someone who has lived here almost 30 years (but won't be after I retire in a few years).

It may be a pain but can be done.   Call them and ask exactly what is needed. Here is more info...

It has been forever since I lived in MA, but it should be the same for any state. If you have proof that titles were not issued for older vehicles in the state you brought it from, and proof it came from there, and proof you paid for it, they should be able to register it and issue you a title. California tried to tell me the same story when I moved here in 1995. Its just a matter of making the DMV clerk go get the big book and look up the laws in the state you bought it from. You may need to have the DMV or police do a VIN verification to make sure the registration/title they are about to issue to you has the correct VIN and motor number listed on it. Were you turned around and sent home by the clerk, or did you just make a phone call to their info line? I suggest you try the phone method first.

It is strange, but to the clerks at least they prefer lies and forgeries to just being helpful. If the right forms are in front of them, even if its got a dodgy signature in fresh ink from a guy who died 20 years ago they are okay with it. I've used that method too.

Just called the RMV. They said the previous NH registration and the notarized bill of sale was enough to get a MA title and the bike registered.

Sounds easy. We'll see if it actually is when I go to the RMV later this week....

I registered my 750 in MA with no title as well. I believe it once had one because the registration was MA, not sure, but they first tried to push me out the door, then after trying to explain that the previous owner didn't have one either, they said they would do a "title search". This involved them telling me to come back in 2 days while they called the main registry(boston), and they looked in the physical files. After nothing turned up, they would allow me to register it. I also had to get a VIN inspection at a local police station before going back. (had to print the form from the RMV website and bring with the bike in tow.) When I went back I had to find the same person who dealt with me the first time.

But being a bike from NH and no title, it shouldn't be as much as an issue.  if all else fails, find a RI friend to register it there.
