Since I don't have a donor bike and I'm building from a basket, can someone tell me what this is and where it goes?

Yellow wires on my bike go from the gen to the rectifier, if your bike is a Honda maybe that’s a starting point, you never mention what your basket of bits is  ;D

Yup, it's the rectifier. Should go behind the left cover by the fuse box, regulator, etc. Don't remember the wire connections off the top of my head but if you have a manual, it's in there.

Thats what I thought, but I dont have one of those bikes........good they use common colour codes  ;D now if only I could find the size of tube I'm looking for I'd also be happy ;)

All the yellow wires go to the alternator- doesn't matter which one goes to which.

The Red goes to the positive battery terminal and the green goes to the ground. If the bike you're putting it on has the original wire harness, it should plug right in. The only difference between the early and later silicon diode rectifiers was the tang on the connector to keep it from vibrating apart:
