Re: CB750 K6 - Step 8b - Now Side Tracked to Oil Cooler
« Reply #200 on: August 17, 2015, 04:23:44 pm »
Today before it got to boiling in the garage, I pulled off the Lockhart oil cooler and the lines from the adapter plate.
Decided to clean it up, even though the oil coming out was still oil and clean.
Got it all pulled apart and cleaned up.
Then I noticed the front of the engine looked pretty grimy so I will clean that up before putting the cooler back on.

Also, the exhaust spigots are a bit rusted.  I will likely pull these off too and either clean them up or replace them.
The pictures look worse than they are in person.  LOL
Just hoping that they are not welded in there and that the screws come out without resorting to extreme measures.
Going to hit them with some PB Blaster tonight and see how they are tomorrow.
I doubt that using PB will have much effect on it. What you want to put the most consideration into is a good impact hammer with a well fitting bit. A propane torch could be useful also.

mrbreeze,

OK.  Good tip!
I have a Good Impact Driver and bit set and a propane torch.
So when I get to it (hopefully tomorrow) I will give it a go!

Thanks,

Charlie

Today I got to taking off the Exhaust Spigot from the #1 cylinder.
The head of one of the screws was a bit buggered, so using the heavy impact tool, I figured what the H___ and gave it a few whacks.
In short, no go.  So I drilled the head off and the spigot came off.  The other screw gave up with a couple of whacks of the impact tool.
I had given it the PB Blaster treatment last night a couple of times.  Don't know if it helped, but at least it didn't hurt.  LOL

Having drilled the head off the one screw, I figured I was home free.  Oh well.  I had to drill a hole, 3/16 in the screw and use an easy out and fortunately it came out with no further trouble.  Then with the temperature climbing, I grabbed the Front Sprocket cover and started working on getting it sanded and polished.

So progress was made.  Not much but still progress.

Hopefully more tomorrow.

I hope you're not using a Harbor Freight or equivalent driver. If you paid less than $20 for it I wouldn't count on it for much.

Now if only we could get the tools to work by themselves while we watch and tell them what to do, that would be priceless!!!!!!  :) :)

I'm afraid of that advancement in technology. With a mind of their own, these tools would certainly turn against me!

Re: CB750 K6 - Step 8c - Battle of the Exhaust Spigots...............
« Reply #209 on: August 20, 2015, 12:55:16 pm »
A long time ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away, a small colony of Exhaust Spigots was plotting the overthrow of a 750 restore.
And then came our hero armed with his PB Blaster, Gordon Impact Wrench, 3 pound maul and his trusty sidekick a 40 year old Craftsman Electric Impact Wrench!

Guess who won??????
And it wasn't that colony of Spigot Screws.   LOL
But they did put up one heck of a fight.

3 of the 8 came out without bloodshed.  Couple whacks of the Impact Driver and they were History.
2 needed the convincing of my trusty sidekick the Craftsman Electric Impact Wrench.
The last 3 (must have been the Spigot Leaders) required drilling and subsequent tapping.  Nasty little Bas#$%$#s.

Conveniently I had a good array of drill bits including the 17/32 bit that was just the right size as the final drilling to accept the 8mm tap.
So, a full few hours but, the Exhaust Spigots are out and soaking in some Evaporust for a few hours.  Then they will get the Ultrasonic treatment and hopefully be nice and clean and ready to go back in when I get the virgin 8X22mm flat exhaust spigot screws.

I plan on using some anti-seize on these little fella's.  Unless someone has a different approach.

Will get some pictures later on after I sit and talk to Nips Corona for a bit.  :)

Hard to believe some times that this is Fun.  LOL

Glad to hear you got them out Charlie. I haven't tried any of Gordon's tools yet but I'm sure they are up to snuff. I'm not using the exhaust flanges anymore....my header uses the studs so I'm selling the flanges. Sometimes you run into problems with these old bikes but with the proper tools and patience you can successfully tackle it.

mrbreeze,

Thanks.
Gordon's Driver Set really is quite good and I am not sorry I bought the set including the heavy duty Impact Driver!

Wonder if I could use studs instead of the screws?  The studs would probably get in the way of the Flanges for a stock 4-4 exhaust though.

It did take a lot of patience, but, in the end we prevailed.  :)

Stev-o

They were RUSTY and really ugly looking.  :)   And those flat screws were realllllllllllyyyyyyyy rusty.

And I figured that if I have to tear the engine down at some point, getting these out now and cleaning them up will (hopefully) make it easier in the future.  Plus, I'm cleaning the front of the engine up and these were in the way.  LOL

And that's my story and I'm sticking to it.   :)   :)

Thanks, I'm glad I won the Battle too!!!!  :)  :)

Here's some help: when putting those back in, get some (real) anti-seize and daub them good. I did this to my own in 1972 when I got the bike (and had a wreck, had to fix fins...), and when I took them out in 1980 and again in 2011, they came out with a light whack of my impact driver. They are still the OEM ones, 40+ years later and 3 times out!

Hondaman,

Thanks!!!!!!
I have some Real Anti-Seize (30+ years old from when I rebuilt my <long gone> 69 Trans Am> and still Good), so I will use it liberally on the New Spigot Screws.

And Stev-o, Yes, everything I own (mechanical anyhow) is Old.  Some almost as old as dirt.  ROFL!!!!

Thanks Again,

Stev-o,

Actually it was a Firebird with the "Trans-Am" package.
My ex wanted Mist Green.  Basically it was a sleeper.  LOL
My choice would have been either the White or the Black.  But what mama wants mama gets.
Might be another reason for being an ex.

If I can find some pictures I'll post, but don't get your hopes up.
Also had 75, 80 (Turbo) & and 84 Trans-Am's.  And they were all Black and Gold!!!!

Always liked the early 'birds, and especially the Trans Ams.

Stev-o,

The 69 was a cool car.  Mainly because it was one of the first of the muscle cars.  But I did like the other 3 as much, but for different reasons.  <G>  The 75 was the real Monster, but it didn't surprise anyone with that shaker hood.  LOL

So I soaked the first 2 of the Spigots overnight in Evaporust and today I put them in the Ultrasonic while in the Evaporust.  Gave them 4 of the 6 minute cycles in the Evaporust and then 2 more cycles in Simple Green HD (Purple stuff).  I think the first 2 came out pretty decent, so the 3rd and 4th are soaking now until tomorrow.  Will repeat the treatment for these as well.  Also before the Evaporust bath, I cleaned the insides with some ZEP 505 to degrease and clean the inside up before hand.  (And so the Evaporust wouldn't get mucked up by the gunk and carbon.

First picture is of the #2 & #3 spigots before removal.  Was pretty rusty!
Other picture are what #1 (and #2)  look like now.

While the Ultrasonic was doing its thing, I did some cleaning on the front of the engine and also started the sanding and polishing of the front Sprocket Cover and the Valve Cover Breather Cover.

Looks like Oil Spots which I don't think I can get out.  Anybody know if they will come out with sanding????

So progress made today, again, until it got too hot in the garage.

mrbreeze,

I know what you mean!!!!
The car I really, really Miss was my 65 Plymouth Sport Fury Convertible!!!!!!!!
That car was an absolute MONSTER.  Put me through Jr College!!!!  And paid for a lot of parties and beer.
Myself and the other 6 guys that shared a house worked on that car when we weren't in class or doing homework.
Won a lot of street races!!!!  And surprised a bunch of people.  It was a real sleeper.
