Rafi,

Thanks for posting the Pic.  I couldn't remember where you posted it on your build thread!
And Thanks to Ron for reminding me.  :)

Rafi, it's a curse!!!!  A few days ago, I pulled up next to a Brand New Goldwing that had more chrome on it then I ever remember wings having and the first thought I had was, I want to see him polish all that chrome in 40 years.  ROFLMAO

On another note, I promised that I would provide an update on the Gas Tank cleaning (where I used the Prep & Etch).  Well after what was it, 3 or 4 days, it looks the same as it did when I took the last picture.

And hopefully I'll get to finish the polishing tomorrow so I can start the final assembly and tightening.
I had to help unload and sort about 10,000 pounds of raw packaged dog food for the co-op I belong to, so I can feed my pups.  Took a big chunk out of my day, but worth it.

Well, here's a couple teaser shots (from last May) until I get the photo-op this weekend. This was pre-paint (the first paint job failed, as you can see, but we rode it a while to break it in anyway). I just got it all together tonight.

These 2 pix, in particular, are about the exhaust system. It is a German-made almost-clone of the Dunstall 4-2 design, with the most brilliant joiner-wye arrangement (sadly, hidden under the bike, here) that I have seen. The wye is set up to create header extraction starting at 5000 RPM, based on desings made for Twins with 180 degree timing. The header pipes are rechromed by Advance Custom Chrome of Pennsylvania, and a perfect job of it.

This K5 has been owned by this rider since 1975 (it was slightly used when he got it) and loved like a little kid the whole time. He travels 90% of the time on his work, and the bike got "trapped" on Guam for 5 years in the 1990s as he got moved hither and yon. When he got it back, all it would do was run: it had 67k miles on it then and was a rusted, salt-corroded lump when he brought it to me. He had installed a (incorrect) used wiring harness to get it running, because even the connectors had corroded away. It took me 2 years total elapsed time to find, make, re-plate, and finally re-paint (with Frankenstuff's excellent side covers!) everything, and the engine has had every part touched, cleaned, rebuilt or replaced. It is a 749.8cc (2nd oversize) engine now, with VERY long legs, and the exhaust note is pure Dunstall, makes you drool to hear it. I'm taking it on its final shakedown ride this weekend, can hardly wait. The new paint (next set of pix) is on fire when in the sun, done by a local custom-paint guy in Candy Red over microscopic silver flake, a variant of the original Antares Red.

The cockpit has been retailored to be exactly like mine, a setup which this owner loves like I do. It has 6" rise by 5" setback bars (aka "K2 Bars", NLA) to match the mid-height windshield and the stepped seat, putting one's weight directly over the footpegs for mountain riding. These crazy bars took me the full 2 years to find!

And, yes, the final pix will include the Vetter: sorry in advance to those of you who don't like them (we do!). :)

Very nice Mark! Are those Sito mufflers? I like the extended look! Pretty cool they work with stock headers. I have a nice set of rechromed headers collecting dust right now. Maybe someday they'll go on bike 3 ;D

Mark,

VERY, VERY COOL!!!!!!
If I were going to change over to a different exhaust, the one you put on would be it!!!!!
Can't wait to see the rest of the pictures.  Curious about the Dashboard setup.  Take a few pics of that as well.

Thanks,

Quick little mid day report.

Finishing Up polishing the last little bits and pieces.

I couldn't find a Pill Bottle around the house, but I do have a really good variety of PVC type stuff.
So I found a PVC fitting that would work.  1-1/4 barb fitting.  And it does like a charm

And for those interested, the Gas Tank is still the same as the day I cleaned it.

As I sit here after a day of Polishing and buffing talking to Coronita,
I can't really believe that there is nothing really left to sand, polish or buff.
I think I'm almost going to miss it..............................................Not!   :)

So, hopefully tomorrow I can put some Mothers on the Valve Cover and Tappet Covers and start putting the Sparkly gal back together with all the torqueing and final assembly things.

Maybe this time next week I will get to hear her run for the first time in 28+ years.

Exciting times!  Those shiny bits are looking fantastic, Charlie.

Don't worry....I have plenty of bits that could use shining on the 500 and the 550.  If you start missing having things to polish, I'll be glad to send you some!  ;)

I'm starting to get excited to hear the old girl myself.  Looking forward to seeing the first start video!

Well, just when I thought it was safe to go back in the water, as I was starting to put a few things back together I found a few more little nuts and bolts, etc. that needed cleaning up.  Bah-Humbug.

But I did manage to get the valve cover and tappet covers waxed with a coat of Mothers.

Also got the New Tach, Speedo and Clutch cables put on.  Had to clean up the little aluminum retaining band that goes on the lower left triple tree bolt.  Didn't adjust the clutch cable yet though.

Tightened up the Lower engine mounting bolts after cleaning them up.
Used some anti-seize on them so that they will come off easier the next time I need to get them off.

Put a new gasket on the breather cover before putting it on.

So, lets see how far we get tomorrow.  :)

Here's a couple more, of the finished bike. It is a 2-up, fast mountain rider. "Dude" is a pretty good hotshoe, so says his [ex]wife who rode with him on it for 18 years (he wouldn't mention it...that's how he is), so I had to get pipes to match. These clear the passenger's boots, IF she leans forward to Dude to ride with him well (like I taught my wife, years ago!). ;)  The first thing to touch the ground is the sidestand, as the SITO pipes let the centerstand ride higher now. On an earlier 750 (like the K4 or earlier) the passenger pegs would touch down first, instead.

It sat on Guam for 5 years when he got transferred there, and he was not allowed gas for it (you get ration tickets for just 1 vehicle per household there!). When I got it 2 years ago, it was a mess, corroded end-to-end, pipes had become see-through. The entire bike, every single part, has been through my hands, inside and out. It is now a 0.5mm overbore with 9.1:1 CR, ported head, polished valves, and some of the other performance mods from my book. The Sito pipes are spectacular in real life, and sound as good as they look, will make great all-day pipes. Feeding those mufflers are a set of show-rechromed K7 header pipes (Advanced Custom Chrome of Pennsylvania), with the #2 pipe extended 1" (after cutting off the old K7 mufflers from that set). It starts at a touch and idles smooth at 900 RPM after 30 seconds, hands-off. Snapping the throttle takes it instantly to 4k RPM, very responsive. Nice bike. :)

The handlebars are real hard to get: they were on the Old Factory K2 and K3 bikes is the only place I've seen them. They are 5.75" high rise with 5.5" pullback and the same width as the K1 bars. The steering stops are shortened up a bit so the mirrors will not hit the Vetter with the mirrors spread to provide a 180 degree view behind when sitting slightly forward, where the bars pull you toward the fairing. This puts the eye level just over the top 1" of the windshield, out of the slipstream and clear in wet weather, with the mirrors fully showing the rear view all without moving your head. This is/was my 1000-mile-day riding position (he loved it on my K2), so that's what he wants, too. It puts the whole of the bike under your crotch for good feel of everything, without you being on your full backside, so the seat quality is vital: he has one of the Manley seats (I had one, wore mine out by 1997 - miss it!), which are top-notch butt-holders.

Mark,

Looks SWEET!  Definitely my kind of bike.  Love the Paint.  Seat maybe comfortable but esthetically looks kind of bulky.  But if you're riding for 6 - 8 hours at a clip, comfort before looks.  :)  :)

I do like the pipes!  Much prefer a balanced look of the 4 - 2 if you can't have the 4 - 4.  I like the idea of the additional ground clearance for cornering, but hitting the side stand first would bother me.  Hitting the pegs that will fold up a bit for me is a bit more reassuring (not having been a racer.  :)  ).

The Vetter always makes the riding position more comfortable for long distance rides.  :)

Thanks for the pictures and write up on that K.

And speaking of other things, I started tightening up things today.
Got pretty much the whole rear end all torqued down, as well as the Engine mounts torqued down.  Had a few more little things to clean up as well.  Only had a couple of hours to work on her today.  Hoping to get the chain guard and carbs back on tomorrow and maybe get more stuff tightened down.

AintNoEasyWay,

Thanks!  They are Good Dogs.  A lot of fun and they keep me moving.  LOL
We do Dog Agility and they are fun to run.  The only bad part I that I'm not a very good handler.
I do better with bikes and cars than with negotiating an Agility course.  :)

The one on the left is My male.  His name is Razor and he's 9.5 yrs old and semi retired.
The one on the left is my 3 yr old Girl.  Her name is Jackie (Sparrow) my little pirate who is just starting her Competition Agility Career.

If you get a Dobe, be prepared to devote a lot of time to them and their training.  But is very rewarding!!!!!

Won't be working on the bike until Monday since we re off to an Agility competition this weekend.

Oh well.  :)

Good luck with the dogs this weekend, Charlie!

I've grown very fond of Bill Benton's dog (Baby Face).  Every time I walk in the door, I end up spending some time playing with him.  Dobermans are great dogs!

Ron,
Thanks.  They are addictive.  :)  And they offer unconditional Love.  And they do have a really interesting sense of humor!
My 2 are European Line dogs.  They are a little more drivey than most American line Dobes and a bit heavier boned.  My male more so than my girl.  But they are always there and ready to do anything I want to do.  And I try to do a lot with them.  One thing you don't want to deal with is a bored Dobe!!!!  :)  And they are way too smart for a lot of people.

Stev-o,
Emma is a very big girl for a Dobe.  My Jackie is only about 65 lbs and is about 25 inches tall.  My boy is a tank at 87 or 88 pounds and 28 inches tall (at the shoulder).  Bet that Emma is a big Love too.  :)  But watch out for her sense of humor.  They will surprise you especially if they think they can get away with it, once she knows you.  :)

Well early call tomorrow so will be turning in soon.

We'll try to do good tomorrow.

When I was a kid my dad got a dobe pup. Red & tan male named Baron. Got his ears cropped and wasn't even out of the bandages and got hit by a car & killed. About a year later he got a black & tan male named Bo. Beautiful dog that had some heavy pedigree. He had that dog for close to ten years but had to have him put down. I have 1 picture of him. If I find it I'll post up.

FGKouki,
Thanks, and that's cool about the Dobe!
Any details????

mrbreeze,
I'd love to see the picture of Bo if you can find it.
My 2 both (from different breeders) have some heavy duty dogs in their pedigrees.
A couple of the more notable are Gino Gomez del Citone, Zhivago van Het Wantij, Windwalker, Alida v Flandrischen Lowen, just to name a few.  :)
And they are all a big bunch of Lovers.  :)

Yesterday and today I got some time in the garage and managed to get a bit closer to firing the Sparkly Gal up for the first time in 28+ years.

Most notable is that I got the Carbs back on along with the Air Box.  What a PITA!  Even with new rubber Insulators and Air Box to Carb rubbers.  Took me a few minutes to figure out which end of the Carb to Cylinder head Insulators goes where, but after looking at it, it became apparent.  There are ridges that match up with the correct end.

Then getting the air box on I had to twist the Insulators to move the carbs down a bit so that the air box mounting holes would line up.
So, that part is done for now, although I'm pretty sure they will have to come off again.  :)

Used the new K&N filter in the air box.  Didn't trust that the old one would be serviceable.  One of those, I'm here so just do it things.
Put a New K&N sticker on the air box next to the 40 year old original one.  (Pic below.  :) )

Got the speedo and tach cables in, as well as putting the wire harness back in place with the retaining bands.  Put the Coils back in and Connected them back up.  Connected up the Front Brake switch as well.

While doing the carb install, I had to clean up the mounting clamps, which wasn't hard, just time consuming.  Used a Red Nylon brush on the drill and they look presentable and gave them a little Mothers to hopefully slow down any corrosion and grime.

So I think that by the end of the week if I can get some more time, I may be ready to try a first start.

Still have to put the new throttle cables in and go through the 3000 mile service stuff and a few other little things.

Stev-o,

Thanks, it's starting to come together. :)  Finally.  LOL

As to the answer to your question.  The first three years it was in my Ex's garage and I wasn't allowed to retrieve it.  That is where most of the deterioration took place.  When I was finally allowed to get it out of there and bring it "home", I was involved with the kids as much as I could.  Which was late high school and college stuff.  Then I had my mother to take care of and then my new better half and I took up SCUBA Diving and did a lot of really cool Wreck Diving, including wrecks like the Andrea Doria, and the Monitor (from the Civil War) and loads of other wrecks of historical significance.  We were in a group of what you would call hard core Gorilla Divers.  The women were as good as the men!  Nothing like watching a 5' 7" female go over the side with Twin 100's, 2 80 cu ft stage bottles and all the other accoutrements to dive a wreck sitting in 150 to 250 ft of water.  LOL  After almost 10 years of diving, we decided to buy our own boat and had that for about 14 years and that was an every weekend (Friday through Sunday) thing from March through November.  Didn't leave time for hardly anything else.  Then we decided to sell the boat and buy an RV and go see what the rest of the US is like when the better half retires (which was this past spring, but we bought the RV a few years ago).  During all this, I got involved in Dogs and Dog Agility about 8 years ago, so, time has never been in large supply to devote to everything I want to do.  Plus, for the last few years (maybe 7 or 8 since I retired from corporate America, haha) I build business grade web sites to earn a few dollars here and there.

As I've said to almost anybody that asks, "if I stopped coming up with projects or things to do, right this instant, I'd be 110 before my current list is completed".  And I still have a GL1000 that's waiting for it's turn.  LOL

So, that's the story why the 750 has waited so long.

Charlie,
Your stories make me smile!  And I love this build.  It's funny how with some of these build threads you get invested as a reader, follower, or contributor and start to view the bike as partly yours.  This build is one of many such for me that I have enjoyed thoroughly as I've watched you bring this beautiful lady back to her former glory.

I'm anxiously awaiting hearing her again.  (By the way, you should send a photo of the K&N stickers side by side to K&N in an email, along with the story.  I wouldn't be surprised if you made their website.  Pretty cool photo there.)

Keep up the good work, my friend.

Hey Charlie, Almost there on the bike! First fire-up is one of the things in life that gives a guy that smile that can't be wiped away! Good to see you have so much on your plate to keep you busy. Sure beats the hell out of rotting away in front of a TV like some do. I found 2 pictures of Bo....thought I only had one. The one with my dad in front of the logging truck is dated July 76 so the other one is probably in the same year give or take. I have no idea where the dogs papers ended up but I know he had some good linage. Keep plugin' away on the bike. It's sooooo close!

Stev-o,

Yup, we spent a week in Cozumel.  Us and 2 other couples from here in NJ that we normally dove with.  After the third day, the 3 guys got incredibly bored!  So we (the guys) decided that our next drift dive, we would peak over the Wall.  The divemaster totally freaked when he looked over the edge of the wall and saw 3 small specks at about 180 ft.  LOL  But, we were diving doubles using a suicide manifolds.  :)  Then the following day after having to generously tip the dive master so he'd let us go diving there again, we went looking for sharks.  Found about 7 of them asleep nosed into a coral head like airliners at a terminal.  My buddy Tommy, wanted to poke them and see if they were really asleep..................  I left.  :)

But there was a place along the beach road where we got thoroughly juiced up on tequila shots.  Didn't dive the following day, could barely stand.  And as punishment, we had to go shopping, but that turned out OK, cause we found a bar in the shopping plaza in the little town.  :)  Like they say, A little of the hair of the dog that bit you.  Hahahaha
