Yup, we spent a week in Cozumel.  Us and 2 other couples from here in NJ that we normally dove with.  After the third day, the 3 guys got incredibly bored!  So we (the guys) decided that our next drift dive, we would peak over the Wall.  The divemaster totally freaked when he looked over the edge of the wall and saw 3 small specks at about 180 ft.  LOL  But, we were diving doubles using a suicide manifolds.    Then the following day after having to generously tip the dive master so he'd let us go diving there again, we went looking for sharks.  Found about 7 of them asleep nosed into a coral head like airliners at a terminal.  My buddy Tommy, wanted to poke them and see if they were really asleep..................  I left. 

But there was a place along the beach road where we got thoroughly juiced up on tequila shots.  Didn't dive the following day, could barely stand.  And as punishment, we had to go shopping, but that turned out OK, cause we found a bar in the shopping plaza in the little town.    Like they say, A little of the hair of the dog that bit you.  Hahahaha

Been down to Cozumel more times than I can remember, just a quick 2 hour flight from Houston.
We got to know a Divemaster real good, he would take the advanced divers on incredible dives down through caves at 145 feet! (I really wasn't advanced but faked it pretty good!) Edmundo dove every day, knew all the good spots, swam with giant turtles, hand fed green eels and even made my wife pet a nurse shark! (No teeth)

He's come a long way, has his own shop now, last time we were there he taught my daughter to dive.

That's pretty cool.  Problem for me and the gang I used to dive with was that we were Wreck Divers.  If there isn't a shipwreck around, it gets pretty boring for us.  Did you ever read the book Shadow Divers???  The book is very interesting.  We dove with those guys.  Actually John Chatterton was our wreck diving mentor/instructor. 

Cozumel is a nice place for warm water diving and some very relaxing diving.  There are times now that I would probably enjoy it.

Chachacha does sound familiar, but I don't remember if that was the shop we dove out of.  We were there around 1993 or 94.

Well got to take the Dogs out and then get the day started.

5 or 6 years between them is ideal! That way they are still young enough to play together but one is not a nuisance to the other.  Without being too morbid it's nice to not have them both pass away so close to each other too.

I agree with that, but I did have a 7 yr old girl that I lost this past spring.
Was a very fast thing.  Hemangioarcoma.  2 weeks from the time we saw any symptoms, she was gone.
She was the Mother of my 3.5 yr old girl.

They do take a piece of your heart with them.

Today we got a little closer to the first start.

Put in the new throttle cables.  Tried the old ones and they were binding a bit so I went ahead and changed them.
The new cables feel, well, like new.    They pull nicely and they snap back very nicely.
Then I pulled the points cover and got the marks lined up to do the Cam Chain adjustment.
Had forgotten my old routine.  Go figure, only 28+ years and I didn't remember.  LOL
I got to TDC on 1 & 4 with #1 on compression and turned to where the advance spring was even with the timing mark.
Then made the Cam Chain adjustment.
Then we got to the job that I really don't like, but I guess because I don't like it, I take extra care.
I set the valves.  Not to worry, I only rotated the crank shaft forward.    And I used the kick start lever to do the rotation.
Got all valves set.  Intake to 0.02" and exhaust to 0.03".  Also had to customize one of my feeler gauge sets with bends in all the right places.  So that job is done.  Put the Tappet Covers back on hand tight using the new O-Rings.

If the weather here in NJ does what they are calling for, Rain, Wind, More Rain, More Wind, repeat until Monday or Tuesday it looks like I won't be away for the weekend so we may have a First Start over the weekend.

All I need to do is set the Static timing, and put the Exhausts on, put the battery in.  And probably another half dozen things I've forgotten. 

Hopefully I'll be able to post a message in the "Let's see your SOHC on the road" soon. 

And I will try to video the First Start if I get there.

Well, today was an exciting day, filled with the events that shape men's minds and souls.  (W Cronkite)

The day started out Windy, Rainy and Generally dismal.  Wasn't what you would call a particularly upbeat day.
But, we tried to turn it around and make it a memorable one.

So we went ahead and Put a quart of BelRay 20W-50 in the top end.  Put some in each of the Intake tappet holes.  Then put some oil in the Oil Galley hole and finally a couple of quarts in the Oil tank.

Gave the 28+ year old points a check and re-gapped them to 0.014".  All good so far.
Then put the wife's car out in the driveway so I could wheel the K6 (aka Sparkle - LOL) out into the main part of the garage.

Went in and grabbed the brand New Scorpion Battery.  Pulled it out of the box and HEY wait a second.  The Terminals are backwards!!!  WTF??  OK, so I know I've got some Heavy Wire with Alligator clips around here.  Just need to dig them out and put Ring Clips on the other ends.  OK, so much for that. 

Now we grab the Auxiliary Gas Tank and Put some gas in it.  All good so far.

Then get the Phone set up for Video.  Start the video rolling for one final walk around to make sure we haven't forgotten anything obvious. 

Now the moment of truth.  Turn the Kill Switch to the Kill Position and Stab the Electric Start button.  Nothing!!!!!  Oh, right, we need to turn the Key to the ON position.  Very Important detail.  Not too excited.

OK, key On, Kill Switch On, hit the Start Button and the starter whirrs just like it did 28+ years ago.  No Oil Pressure yet.  Hmmmmm.
I thought by putting Oil in the Top End and Galley Plug Pressure was supposed to happen really quick??

OK, hit the button again.  Ahhhhhhh  Oil Pressure!  Almost 70 PSI!  Goooddddd  deal.

Alrighty then.  Kill Switch to Run Position.  Yes Key is still on.  Fuel Valve from Aux Tank set to On.  Choke in the Full Up position.
Now Push the BUTTON.

Not going to spoil it.  Hahahaha  Watch the Video!

Very cool Charlie!! Now onto all the little finish up stuff, a little fine tuning and the first ride. Sounded good for a first start and didn't appear to have any leaks....all good things!

I've Still got a bunch to do, but I know it'll happen now.

Today I thought she sounded kind of rough, but I'll get her dialed in I'm sure.

When I put the new plugs in, I changed from the X24ES-U plugs and used the D8EA's.
I'm wondering if I should change back? 

Well, tomorrow I have a bunch of little things to do to get her ready to roll out for that first ride.
Hope I'll get my first ride sometime this week.

I vote to use the D8Ea's. Now you know it starts, resist the urge to fire it up and let idle gotta keep those revs up for oil flow and ride to put it through some load cycles! (With a camera attached, pointed at your smiling face!)

Probably will keep the D8EA's in.  No worries on the idling.  But I will need to do it one more time to make sure carbs are good to go and sync'd.  Not much into selfie's, but I'm sure you can or will hear the excitement clear enough.

I need to Sync the carbs as you mentioned.  And Yes, all cylinders were firing.  The #1 exhaust felt a little cooler than the other 3, but the header pipe was hot, but will need to shoot all the pipes with the infra-red temp gun.  I am also going to change the points and condensors in all likelihood (since I have a whole new points plate still in the package.  And Yes it's a TEC    ). I need to do the dwell setting method and get out the old Stuart Warner Timing Light.  I also need to check and possibly set the voltage regulator.  Will also likely recheck the valve adjustment just to make sure they're all good after that first run.  Then I need to get all the electrics checked.  I didn't connect the rear turn signals and the front brake switch may have a problem.  So, there are a small bunch of things I need to do over the next few days as well as get the insurance going and re-register her.  Wondering if the NJ DMV will let me use the original plate?

+1 on giving it more revs over letting it idle for so long. If you do let it idle like that .....get a fan on it and especially when you are doing the carb synch. There will be a bunch of little things to do before the maiden voyage but I would say you have a good jump on it just by having it hit on all four, good oil pressure, no leaks, etc. I would also plan on another oil change soon after maiden voyage.......lots of crap probably floating around in there after all those years dormant. Very exciting time hey Charlie?

Got to do some cleanup work today.

Got the turn signals all connected and tested them.  No Flashing.  OK.  Found the Flasher (an Original Signal Stat 142) and pulled it out.  Went up to Advanced Auto Parts and found a replacement that had been talked about on other threads and sites.  The one they talked about was the #552 made by Tridon and a few others.  Picked one of those up ($3.99)  Was looking at all the other flashers there and saw a Solid State Electronic Flasher.  It is an EP34.  Has 3 terminals.  Battery Positive, Negative (Ground) and a Lamp connection.  It was $11.99 so I picked it up in case the #552 didn't work as expected.  Figured that between the 2 I could make something work.   So back in the garage, I first tried the #552 Flasher.  It worked but the Flashing interval was very slow.  Then, I decided I would try the EP34 and found that there was an unused green wire (Ground) just sitting there.  So I connected the Black wire to the Battery Positive, The Green to Negative and the White wire to Lamp.  Flashing was much quicker so I found a big gushy fat rubber band and attached the EP34 to the flasher mounting bracket.  The #552 will be the emergency spare.

Then I checked the Front Brake light.  Pull the lever and nothing.  Pulled the 2 wires off the actual switch and much to my chagrin, the studs were dirty.  Thought I had already cleaned them.  Took some 400 grit emory paper and went over them.  Reconnected and tested.  We have front brake light.  Rechecked the rear brake light and it works just fine.

Headlight was also working fine.  Then tested the horn.  Pushed the horn button and Nothing.  OK, so into the horn circuit I go.  I have twin Fiamm horns and they wire through a relay back to the battery with an in-line fuse.  Checked the fuse.  Looks bad.  Replace fuse and scared hell out of the Dogs.  Sorry Kids. 

Then I put the Stev-o supplied hinges and latch on the Second Ugliest seat in the world.  Bought some stainless steel 6X16mm bolts and some 6mm 1.0 thread nylock nuts while at Advance Auto Parts, so they did the trick.

Going to put in the Hondaman Headlight Relays, so started figuring out how and where to put the wiring in place.  Printed out the K3-K7 schematic and figure I can pencil in what I need to do for that as well as the Key switch mod.  Don't think I need the Start button mod since my headlight is turned off when the start button is pressed.  But not 100% sure on that.  If anyone has info on that I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Tomorrow I need to call the Insurance Company and see what I need to do to get the bike insured.  I definitely want to do an agreed on value.  So we'll see how that goes.

I don't know who your insurance company is, but in my case we have Nationwide for my home & auto.  However, I found Progressive to have a much better deal for the motorcycle so I went with them.  Geico was likewise better than Nationwide.

Overall, I really like Nationwide but Progressive's rate was about 1/3 of what Nationwide quoted me.

Thanks for that.  Sorry but Progressive is on my do not deal with list. 
I have NJM for most all my insurance and will see what they say tomorrow.
I had planned on talking to GEICO if NJM doesn't pan out.
