At least Valvoline is trying to help!

This isn't an 'oil thread', but a singular on-line product evaluation attempt, by me.  :D
If you have used this oil, maybe make a comment about it? If not, don't bring up another oil topic, please.

http://www.valvoline.com/products/consumer-products/motor-oil/motorcycle-atv-oil/13

"Normal" Valvoline oils (good for car engines) have long been my personal choice, and I typically get upwards of 300k miles from my engines with it. But, it has always had too much detergent for bikes, making it foam in our SOHC4 engines. Since the EPA started edicting in 2002 that oil makers follow THEIR rules and not [needed] ones, most oils have fallen well short of what we need. Here is the first version I have seen in a long time that is trying to meet the needs: good for wet clutches, has more-than-others zinc, and has anti-foaming agents included. I'll try some out at my 100 mile oil change and report back (if I can find some around here).

...and you can be sure that Valvoline is taking some serious flak from the EPA for selling it...

I am 'shopping' for a new bike oil because the Castrol 4T falls well short of my expectations since they, too, removed the zinc, starting in 2008. It makes the 1-2-3 gearshifting sticky, and the clutch 'grabby', compared to, say, Bel-Ray mineral oils. Problems is: Bel-Ray is hard to find outside of the 9 AM -to-6 PM bike shops, and locally they are gouging over $7 per quart for it. I work 9 AM to 8 PM most days, can't ever GET to a bike shop...and shipping heavy oil makes it closer to $10 per quart.  >:(
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

The demons are repulsed when a man does good. Use that.
Blood is thicker than water, but motor oil is thicker yet...so, don't mess with my SOHC4, or I might have to hurt you.

Been using that since my engine rebuild.   Good clutch and shifting performance.

I've been using the old formula Valvoline. I have some left, maybe I'll look for this and try it first. Thanks for pointing out the product change.

Have always used regular Valvoline. (Since the early 70's)  Recently used the motorcycle version.  Will probably continue to use it.

yeah, I use it quite frequently because it's easily available at the big box auto stores...seems to hold up better than the heavy duty diesel 15w40's but doesn't perform quite as good as Motul 20w50
If it works good, it looks good...

Yea Mark check out the Valvoline VR1 racing oil. It has high zinc at least according to my online research. That's what I have been using and I haven't had any foaming issues.

I tried the 10w40 and didn't like it.  I felt a lot more grinding and could feel a lot more heat from the engine to where I didn't feel comfortable keeping it in my bike.  I used it for about 500 miles before switching back to Castrol 4T (the 20w50 though).

I just bought some Castrol 4T because it says Jaso MA2 which I believe means it has full zinc? I got the 15/40 bein' the middle of winter over here. I had some Bel ray 10/40 in and thought it was good in winter but I have the engine down for rebuild and saw the Castrol n thought it would be good for zinc, am I wrong.

I thought Jaso MA2 was more to do with modern bikes with catalytic converters, I don't think it has anything to do with ZDDP levels at all...

I've been running the Valvoline 20-50 in my bike for a little over a year now. I couldn't find any mention of zinc levels on the label, so I added a small of zinc additive for insurance.
I just bought some today at Auto Zone for $3.99 a quart. :)

Well I'd be very happy to get more info on whether Jaso MA2 means it has full zinc, anyone else?

JASO-MA2 – This specification was introduced in 2006 for  modern motorcycle engines. As well as being a higher standard of oil the JASO-MA2 approval means the oil is suitable for use in bikes with catalytic converts in the exhaust system.

Quote
JASO MA-2 was introduced in 2006 in reaction to catalytic converters becoming common in bikes due to EPA/EU requirements.

Google Jaso MA2, there's plenty of info online mate... ;)

How do you know what has zinc and what doesn't? Also ive noticed no foaming in my oil tank with valve line 10-30w. Though she does run a bit warm but I don't have anything to compare it to.

I've been using Valvoline  manufactured synthetic 15W-50 oil from NAPA for the last few years and I love it. Priced below most other synthetics ...........worth a look for sure.

Are you running that with a cb750k? How often do you change your oil being its synthetic?

I've been using the full synthetic version for a few years now. Same zinc levels according to the product PDF. No problems so far.

the valvolene VR1 racing oil 20w-50 says right on the front label hi zinc......also says on the back label, so does the rotella.  being on a farm, we tend to have more of the rotella on hand than anything else, it was a friend who told me about the valvolene for the bike.  used it all year so far with no issues at all
