Maybe you did have some sadistic neighbor that thought it would be fun to throw that spring into your box of parts.Hope you get er' figured out.

And now a guess from a newbie:

Could it be the spring between carbs 1and 2  or 3 and 4? I just got done rebuilding mine and I noticed springs that assist the sync of the 2 outer carbs. Just wanted to play along and guess. ;D

Nope Phylyn51 - no springs like that on these carbs...  but I found a use for it - the fuel hose takes a quick bend from the carb to the petcock; the spring is a perfect slide fit over the hose and prevents it from kinking  :D
