How perfect were the factory did hoops?

OK. I've been trying to get these rims perfect with every single technique I have found. I am about 95% there, but there is one area that I can not get right. Its right near the valve hole. It looks like the area where seam was welded. Can I abondon getting this thing any better and leave it this way? I'm assuming the rim was made with a very loose tolerance and getting it perfect is impossible.

There will always be a "kick" on the rim where it was welded and the original Honda tolerance, both sideways and verticaly, was 1/8 inch
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

The only thing you can do is true it to an average at the kink area. So when you rotate it about the kink, true it such that it averages out as best as you can at that point (with minimal lateral runout). You will have to work on a few spokes either side of it. Don't worry, you won't notice it when riding.
 As for the rest of the wheel, get it as spot on as you can, which from memory was 0.5mm for both radial and lateral runout.

I tapped one with a plastic mallet, got it very close. Proceed with caution. A wide spot at the weld is common though.

Ok, just making sure. The wheel always had a little kick in one spot since I got the bike. Thanks for the replies.

Maybe on a Harley Davidson.

I was a Honda dealership mechanic. The stock Honda rims were .008 thousands of being in true.

Many H-D customers brought HD rims in our shop to be trued. The ends of the rim that were welded together in some cases were 1/8 inch off.

Sometimes the rim will be wider because it hit a pothole hard . A plastic hammer can take care of that.

Let me ask about my rear now. As you may or may not know, I rode home missing about 9 spokes. Now when I lace my rear, its all over the place, before all this it was straight as an arrow. Should I throw it away? Start over? Anyone have a good rim available?

When truing a wheel,  i use a marker or tape to mark certain areas.
 I would mark the weld, and it you are using a dial, lift over the weld or just ignore it.. Ie measure just before and just after the weld..
 If the deviation is short, ie weld width, the bead of the tire will not distort much, and it will probably not be noticeable..

There are some rims that even experts can not get to come into alignment.
Those you just have to dispose of.

For real? A Honda mechanic told me that years ago but I just assumed he was full of #$%* like most of them are. I went ahead and trued it down to a few thou; easy to do with comstars.
FWIW, this the same mechanic who mixed up the plug wires and tried to explain it away as valve damage.
You really must do your own work.
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.

Killer, that part of the 750 manual was regarding spoke wheels; I didn't check the supplement for the Fs with Comstars.

When i recently laced my wheels up i found the same thing the rims go a little wonky around the weld. all i did is ignore the runout about an inch in both directions of the weld. after that i was able to get them true'd up to 0.010"

Well, after 5 Beers, My trusty dial indicator, and masking tape, I got everything perfect, except for the welds. The trick here was to use the dial indicator as a guide and mark the areas with tape that needed to be taken care of. It took just about 2 hours of trial and error.

I hold my hands up, I remembered it wrong---must have been thinking about Triumphs!! Honda max is 80 thou or 2mm and if you think how easy it is to measure to 1/2 mm using a steel rule that is 10thou

OK..I was off by 6 years. We all fudge a little on our age.
When I true a rim I check the concentricity of the rim with the hub first ,then I get the side to side.

Well, I got them perfect. All balanced and whatnot, my powder coater #$%*ed me.

I did all the spokes my self. They came out amazing. Even after wrenching on the nipples the powder looks great. I couldn't fit the rims in my oven. This is what happens when your powdercoater tries to do 2 coats after he fully cured the first coat. I guess he didn't like how the first finish came out, so he tried to apply a second coat, which is obviously do-able but not like this. I peeled as much off as I can. I cant afford the time to re-lace this wheel again, I JUST WANT TO RIDE! So now I suppose I'm going to live with it?
