Topic: Maybe starter solenoid problems

77 cb750 push start button does not turn starter over
 -have voltage coming out of push button to solenoid
 -tried with clutch pulled in
 -can jump the solenoid with a screwdriver to turn starter over and it works

Could it be the solenoid?
Is there a ground that I am missing?

Do a quick and dirty test. Take that green/red at the solenoid and ground that to the negative post of the battery. Does it work now?

The solenoid grounds using the clutch and neutral switch as a safety measure. If the neutral doesn't ground properly and/or the clutch switch is busted it is a no go.

Either way it is still a good opportunity to pop that solenoid open and clean the contacts, it is really simple inside. Two phillips and wiggle the top up to expose the copper contact inside.

If you jumped the solenoid and the motor turns over, solenoid is good.

Check the R control.

Whack the side of the solenoid with the handle of a screwdriver while pressing the start button.... they sometimes get stuck. If it works, then open it up and clean the contacts as already advised. When back together, leave off the big fat wire to the starter, hook up the rest of the wires to it and 'click' it with the start button  x20 times to prove it. Then connect the starter wire... good luck !

I used a jumper from the red/green to battery negative and got nothing.

While pressing the starter switch and whacking at the same time I can get it to work!
I am going to take it apart and clean it.

I have cleaned it up and reinstalled. It doesn't work when I hit the button or when I tap it while pushing the start button. However, I can still make it work when jumping posts with screwdriver

If you jumped the solenoid and the motor turns over, solenoid is good.

Check Replace the R control.

It's not enough to just clean the contacts, you need to put a drop of oil down the shaft, it'll work then.

Jumping the connection the big connections means it is the solenoid or the start button circuit, and or the safety circuit if it has one. Many times it is the bullet connection inside the headlight on the starter button circuit

Steve-o if I have power coming out of the switch why replace it? Just asking. I did get it to work before taking it apart by hitting the solenoid on the side and pushing the button.

I will try a drop of oil on the shaft too

I had one that would still turn over after I had stopped pushing the starter button, a drop of oil n it was good as gold. Same for one that will not engage, crap on the shaft. That is if it is the solenoid of course, sounds like it is.

Run a ground wire from the negative pole of the solenoid to a ground. Any ground. Does the starter button work now? Then it is the safety system. Put a test light to positive wire of the solenoid, from the starter button. Do you have power at the solenoid when you push the starter button? Then it is jot the starter button. I am betting it is either the safety system or the solenoid. If you confirm it is the safety system you can bypass it by running a permanent ground wire from the solenoid. That will not affect anything else.

Thanks for all the help. Got a new solenoid and it fired right up!
Could not for the life of me get the old one to work consistently

Oh well, at least you know it was the sol, maybe two drops of oil
