Installed my MSCS exhaust over the weekend
« on: May 23, 2005, 07:50:37 AM »
Finally got around to installing the new MSCS exhaust on my 76' 550F.  Its been in the box in my garage for almost 2 years now.  Went together super easy and with the pod air filters really woke the bike up.  I had to trim the exhaust hanger that came with it.  First ride was awsome.  No more hesitation and the bike has power and torque that it NEVER had with the orig 4-1 Honda exhaust that was pretty ruster where the collector meets the header.  Sound is awsome and looks great too.  Slight exhaust leak at #1 but not sure whether its valves or not.  There getting an adjustmant this week.  Nothing sort of amazing though and I highly recommend.

Hey Chris, good to hear they're the real deal - I've been looking at getting the MSCS 4-into-1 myself.  My current exhaust has a big, rusty hole in it that probably wouldn't pass inspection.

What do you mean that you "had to trim the exhaust hanger that came with it"?  Also, did you notice if it was lighter than your stock exhaust?  I have a stock 4-into-4 now, so I'm hoping I can get a nice weight reduction out of the swap.

Thanks,
Justin

Justin,

The system is meant for both F and K models.  The F frame is just alittle different where the exhaust mount is.  On the K I dont think you will have to trim the mount strap.  I had to cut about 3" off of it.  Not a big deal to me.  I really like the look of it and the way it sounds is great.  A nice low rumble (almost stock) at idle but screams pretty good when you get on it.

You didn't have any problems with those black 'rubber' sleeves that go around each header pipe into the header?

I ran one of these sets on my CB500K a while back.  It was the 4 into 2 setup.  Those black pieces constantly blew out, back up the header.  I had the bolts down tight etc, but never got them to stay put.

My set of mscs pipes didn't come with any rubber seals....guess that's why they leak around the collectors....

suppose I'd better call Loudfastugly, eh?  :o

There were no seals included in the exhaust.  You reuse your existing exhaust exhaust shims.  Should be 2 per cylinder.  You just play with the positioning and the clamps/flangles and you should be set.  Properly installed there should be no way the shims should blow out.  They didnt on the stock set.  and seem to be just fine on the MSCS set too.  I do have a tiny leak in #1 but I'll just play with the bolt tightness and stock shims until it goes away.

Ohhhhh!  I thought he was talking about something else.  Yes, I reused the shims on the new exhaust.  When he said "rubber" seals, I was under the impression he was talking about some kind of seal that was meant to fit around the header pipe, and be clamped under the collector for the muffler!

Ah, as far as I know there are no seals where the header meets the collector.  You may just have to play with loosening and tightning the connection until it seals itself naturally.  There's not much room to work in there and the only test I did for leaks was hold my hand around the collection area and crack the throttle a few times.  It gets hot FAST so you only have a few tries but I didnt feel any air leaks.  On newer bikes there is a seal in that spot but not on the MSCS exaust,  I dont see where you could possible even put one.  The only option I would suggest and do this at your own risk would be to put a high temp rtv sealant on the header pipes gently coating about 1" where it goes into the muffler.  This may stop any leak you have but will make it a real PITA if you have to take them apart again.
