Looks very nice. I assume that's the 5 speed gearbox. If it is 3rd gear will have significant wear. I would dump the fluids and service. Then check the trans drain plug frequently for metal. There will be some but hopefully no chunks. Just fuzz is considered to be " normal". I also tried not to ride around in third gear. That is a Nice bike!!!!

I've never heard anyone mention a third gear issue as prone to wear on the 5 speed boxes. However, the speedo cable inlet plug on the top of the trans housing is prone to water infiltration.

My R90 box was sitting for many years before I picked it up and it had about 3" of standing water in it. All from a failed cable boot.  :-\

Its 5 speed.  Bike is just serviced, all fluids new. Brake cable and master cylinder new. New "Wirth" springs in front fork.

Seller brought me the bike this morning. Will do my first ride this evening.

It's a specific problem with the 74 model. It was changed for 75 and the kick start deleted.

I'd consider that anecdotal evidence as there are no specific series numbers for the change. In fact, my '74 has the later model crank yet it's still a mid-year production number with a 5 speed. And from reading that, it appears moreover that the issues involved the 5 speeds with a kickstart.

It is definitely the 5 speed with kick start. 74 was the first year for the 5 speed. It was the last year for a kickstart. I believe bmw was making a replacement third gear for a while. My 5 speed w/kick start always had a fair amount of metal on the drain plug. It never caused me problems but I was always aware of it. To put it bluntly the 74 has a bit of a bastardized transmission. Important Parts don't change with the previous or later transmissions and there is a reason for it. Most people just stuck a 5 speed with no kick start in their bike and went on down the road.

Mine is 76.

Kick starter was an option she's got with bigger tank.

1975 CB750 and 1981 BMW R100/7  These are my 2 bikes.

I had a 1976 R90/6 but sold it to finance a motorcycle bucket list trip.

Agree on all the above. I've got a '73 R75/5 LWB and is a lovely bike to ride. The back end has a tendency to lift on take-off (idiosyncrasies of these older BMW's) Mine was a lucky find with one owner and 4000 miles from new. I finishevd a very light cosmetic restoration earlier this year. I still much prefer the Honda 750 though...

Fantastisch!

Hady first ride today. What a pleasure! So easy going, so well balanced. Didnt knew that 50hp may be so strong.

Will put in new selas and membranes

Hope I will get correct idling now.

The carbs are not too bad to work on and you sure can't beat the access. Those diaphragms can get old and stiff or get a small hole. While your in there you should probably replace them if they are questionable.

I can get a pair of carbs of and back on an airhead in about 10 minutes.    It took me about 35 minutes of wrestling to get the carbs out of my '79 CB750 yesterday.    The small SOHC fours are worse, I think it took me an hour to get the carbs out of my CB350F.   That's going to be a fun job to put 'em back in.   :o

I've just seen this R100RS with sidecar and even though I swore to myself that I'd never buy another old R100RS, this one is so beautiful, I'm sorely tempted............. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Yeah, I swore I was going to sell one of my 3 airheads, because, who needs three of them right?
Well, I just bought this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1992-BMW-R-Series-/131507724018?ssPageName=STRK%3AMESINDXX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=ayAICgt6tI91O%252FS5VwfzxIrulwc%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

It does with the original headlight and turn signals.   I'll be removing and selling the fairing.

Although, if it doesn't take too awful much time to remove and reinstall, I might keep it around for cold weather.

I will be selling my '94 Mystic -- I definitely don't need TWO paralever airheads.   I like the Mystic, but, the regular R100R with luggage and a longer seat to peg distance will fit me better.

That looks great mate, but I reckon I'd keep the fairing, it's one of the nicer fairings I've seen on a BMW. ;D

Ha ha, as much as I'd love it, I reckon the seller will want a lot more than $6K, plus I'd have to sell 3 of my bikes just to make enough room in my garage, and I couldn't decide which 3 bikes I'd sell to make room for it. It is beautifully engineered though, whoever did it did great work! Cheers, Terry. ;D
