Since then they've all warmed up to the idea of having a motorcycle, and I've gotten my dad, who used to have an early '70s Kawi 350 in college, to ride it around the neighborhood.  Looks like they didn't disown me after all....
That reminds me of the time I asked my dad if I could borrow his truck to go pick up a bike I was going to buy ('92 Katana - ended up not getting it). He gave me all sorts of crap about bikes. "They're dangerous," "When are you going to learn how to spend your money," that kind of stuff. After about 20 minutes of this, he finally handed me the keys and said "On one condition. You have to let me ride it."  ;D

In 2003 I was given my 1974 CB550.

It's restoration (still in progress) was one of the more rewarding things I took on in quite a while.

68 CB350 in 71.
75 CB750F in 3/75 (refer to avatar)

You've had that CB750F for 31 years?  Awesome.

Mine was a '78 CB750K that I got in 1986.  I passed it along around 1990.  When I got the bug again, I couldn't find anything I liked as much as my old CB, so I picked up a '77 CB750K that I'm restoring.

I started out when I was maybe 11 years old..  See, a friend had a Yamaha DT80- beautiful machine!  It looked like a full-size street bike/motorcycle (turn signals, horn, lights, side panels, etc.) only it was 80cc and kid sized.  It was also "dual-sport", so I guess it was a scrambler- high pipe, high front fender, street knobbies..  One look at this thing, and I *HAD* to get a bike.  Eventually I got one, although not as fancy as my friend's.  Mine was a Z50.  This was around 1984 or so, and the little Z50 must have been either late 60's or 70's vintage.  No lights, no rear suspension.  It did have front suspension, and a front and rear brake, and I abused the living tar outta that thing!  Other friends had: an XR80, KX80, XL100, DS80..  And my little Z50.  I'd jump it, wheelie it, two-up ride it, climb steep hills with it, etc.  It never looked any worse for the wear!  It never broke, and I sold it looking the same as I got it a few years later, when I upgraded to a '77 IT-175 Yamaha.

My first steetbike was a Kawasaki EX-500, which was also a great bike, despite the fact that most friends that had other bikes would talk smack about it.  It was really quick and nimble, and it's a wonder I didn't get myself into trouble on it- although I did manage to slide the front end in a corner once!  I later let a buddy learn to ride on the EX, and he returned that favor by letting me ride his CBR600 Hurricane when he bought his first bike.  Then I moved on to a '79 CB750F, an '81 CB750F, and a '82CB900F.  Sold all of them, and now own my '77 CB550K.

cool putnaja... one of my bikes was an 89 ex500.  that's the bike i owned when i headed off to MMI.  great bike.  so, when my girlfriend was run off the road this past thanksgiving and totalled the vfr800 i was finally able to convince her that the monstrous vfr was too much bike to be getting the feel of the ride (the vfr was her first bike and she barely weighs over a bill)... sooo, while i spent the next few months spending the insurance money to rebuild the vfr... we also ebayed an 88 ex500.  well, it wasn't the bike described in the ad that we drove from denver to chicago and back to pick up so i spent the next 4 months getting it running as well.  now she has two bikes and when the broken wrists healed she jumped back on the horse and hasn't stopped since.  her comfort level on the ex500 has grown leaps and bounds and she feels more comfortable on the vfr as well.

basically what i'm saying is this... whenever someone asks me what kindof bike they should get as the first bike... i have only one answer.  the ex500 is bulletproof, a good size, torquey as hell and easy to ride up to 125mph.

I started out on a crappy Huffy bmx.
But when I was 13, me and a friend went 50/50 on a early 80's Tomos Targa.  We had cut a lot of lawns to raise the $300 asking price.  It was the one with the gas tank that came all the way across like a real motorcycle, but it didn't have all the fairings.  It was missing the front windshield/fairing, no side covers but it had a belly pan and some sweet mag wheels.   I'm guessing the PO dumped it and never replaced them, because I coulnt find a picture of one like it, that and it had a white rattle can paint job.  Man It was fun as hell, but we would always argue on who would get to ride it.
Good times!

But now that I look back on it, I think he ripped us off! >:(
I bought my CB for $300.

My first bike was a James field bike (well it was about 50% James the rest was from God knows where) that barely ran. (My friend had a Triumph Bonneville field bike and that really did go ;D - It was crazy letting 14/15 year old boys loose on that in small orchards!). When I was old enough my Dad very kindly bought me a Yamaha 50 trail bike for getting about the countryside. It was lethal in the wet on the road - like riding on ice. The first bike I bought with my own money was a CB 125 when I was at college in London and I really loved that bike. Never let me down even though neglected.
Sorry for rambling - you only asked for the first bike - nostalgia.  :)

Mine was an '89 as well!  I had mine in the early 1990's..  I would get on the Washington D.C. Beltway, nose over into the fast lane, feel like I had just got up to highway speed and then look down and be shocked when the speedo showed >100mph..  So smooth and powerful- it would do it every time (literally without even trying!), and I'd have to slow down to avoid a big $$$ speeding ticket.!!

I totally forgot about my first bike when I posted here the other day... When I was 16 (late summer 2001) a local shop had a new blue 1999 R1 they were trying to clear out for under $8000(!).  I had been working admissions at Kings Island almost full time because my parents forced me to get a job.  I had been taking a good chunk of each paycheck out of the bank and saving the cash so I could save up for something without my parents giving me hell about saving my money for school.  I also mowed lawns, worked on cars, and had a small EBay business going, all of which my parents didnt know about.  I had more money than a 16 year old should and I really wanted that bike.

I gave my money to an 18 year old friend and had him buy the bike for me and keep it in his garage.  I knew I should start with a smaller bike but I just couldnt pass up on that deal.  It was all the money I had... Not even enough left over for a helmet or permit yet.

Then one day my friend calls me and tells me he has some bad news.  Some friends of his had asked to see the bike run so he took it out on his street for them.... and laid it down at about 35.  The front end had slid into a storm drain on the side of the road which managed to do a lot more damage than a 35mph fall should.
We managed to part off the bike for about $6000 but he still hasnt been able to pay back the rest.

And thats my sad story about never getting to ride my first bike  :'(

My first bike was a '74 CB360 twin.  Loads of fun to ride, but really lacking in any kind of respectful power, since it could barely do 60 mph.  Two-up? fa geddabowtit! 45-50 tops.  Then I got a 82 CB650C "Custom"  sharp bike, I should have kept it  :-[

I think there may have been something wrong with it. My friend had the same bike and he could easily spank me when I rode my '74 CB250G5. Not that it was a fast bike, though.

Back in '84 when the ink on my license was still wet I bought a 1973 Kawasaki H2 Triple for $200.  It was a 750 cc two-stroke.  When I drove it home and pulled into the garage, my mother told me it was too big and I had to return it.  Needless to say I did not....
This was an incredibly large displacement bike to me. My previous experience was with an ancient Yamaha 125 enduro.  A guy my dad worked with told him I needed to be careful--he had had one--and that if I opened it up I could flip the bike over.  He actually scared me enough that I never did anything too extreme with it.  I had that bike for about 4 years, then sold it for $300.  My next bike was a Kaw 750 twin cruiser.  Bad move.
If I only knew then what I know now.

Believe it or not, I have purchased my H1 (with 9700 mi) in TX, priced with USD 300.00 in 2006! ;D ;D.
Wonders will happen every day!  ;D Seller wanted USD 500.00 but I gave him 300.00 because the
carbs were removed and I only tested if the engine turns over. Runs great. ;D
According the pics,..I only have replaced the carb bowls, front brake lines and cleaned the bike little bit.

Ah, the mighty Kawa 2-stroke street triples!

I've never seen one in person, let alone owned/ridden one.  Every single person that I have talked to that has experienced one always has a story to share, and their eyes get wide telling you about them!  Sounds like they are extreme wheelie machine monsters!!

It only makes sense, as I have ridden a modern 2 stroke motocrosser that my buddy who races them owns.  The power band hit so hard, it felt like someone took a baseball bat to my forearms- literally explosive!!  I bet the H1 and H2 sound amazing at full growl too!

breeze, you said a mouthful.  I musta told myself that same thing so many times over the years!
You know what they say about "HindSight and ForeSight". I've always heard and read that that the
Kaw MachIII 500 was bad news and the H2 750 version was a lot meaner. Nowdays, for $300, you
might buys a few parts (very few)for one but not the whole bike.

Yup...the old Kawi triples are def. the #$%* and I like the old Yami Rd's too. Two strokers just fell off the board but if you ever had a chance to experience one,you would for sure miss them!!! I can imagine that they are high $ to build and won't hold up as long as a 4 stroker but man....they are the #$%*!!!!!!!!!

Yes, that motorcycle is no long distance bike in comparison to the good old 4-stroke CB.
Every ride is pure mental tension. It's like sitting on a wasp nest according to the sound and vibrations.
Sometimes, the engine vibrations set free some screws, especially from the side covers.
The bike has an awesome acceleration mixed with poor brakes.
It's definitely no motorcycle for cruising, but it's a part of motorcycle history.
I like the toxic beast.
