Accelerator pump no worky on K8
« on: September 22, 2006, 04:51:12 AM »
And hasn't for the 28 years the bikes has been around.

Worked the carbs over the last couple days. Got them all put back together and no squirting from the accel pump. Took the pump back apart and the pump bowl was completey dry, no gas getting to it. Checked the diaphram over as it acts as the gasket as well and low and behold, one of the two holes that are supposed to be in it is completely blocked off. It was never punched in from the factory. I had to cut the material away to creat the hole. Re-assembled and she's got the squirts now.

PO said it was always pretty hesitant when giving it the throttle, no wonder.

So far the sum total to get this K8 back and going has been $6 for spark plugs. The only thing left to do is get the horn working, brake light is out, and low beam is out. Fortunately have have all the bulbs and headlight in stock and the horn can't be much of a challenge so this has been a realy cheap bike. $456.

Can't wait to get my sidecar attached this weekend.

...have never gotten a good explanation on how to tell if the A. pump is truly working or not...only thing I've everdone is see if it squirts when I pull the #2 bowl, but you never know if its squirting in the other 3 carbs or not  :-\

You wanna know how to tell if you are getting the squirts? ;D

On the airbox side of the carbs, those little brass tips that point up, if those are clean, and the fuel path is clear, the squirts will come fomr those tips. You would have to have your carbs off and the slides pulled out to see the holes in those. Cause it does not squirt out of the top but straight into the carb throat!  My this is a dirty sounding post! :D

actually i mounted the carbs up sans air box and supplied fuel. You could see all 4 squirters doing their job.

Spent tonight trouble shooting electrical gremlins. Got the brake light, low beam, horn working without the need to buy any parts. The high beam indicator is truly burnt out though so got to track one of those down tomorrow.

i dug into my acc. pump yesterday and found the exact same thing .. one of the holes in the diaphragm was blocked and not cut out properly ...the other was punched out but the hole was way too tiny .. i have the punch that is used in dentistry to make tiny punches in rubber sheets so i used it to make 2 very clean cut holes that match the size of the inlet and outlet holes of the acc. pump assembly ...

then i sprayed carb cleaner into the tiny hole in the upper body of carb # 2 that supplies the fuel spray to all 4 carbs ..after a few sprays all 4 carbs had nice jets of sprays coming ouf of the tiny brass tubes and as eldar mentioned the spray are directed towards the motor and not vertically upwards .. finished it off with blowing compressed air in all carb. air/fuel circuits ..
