Shifting problems
« on: June 28, 2014, 12:26:18 AM »
Went to take my "71 CB175 out today and found a new problem, I noticed the foot gear change lever on the bike is getting a bit mushy lately, and now it went from mushy to just not returning to the center position. So, if I were to push the lever into first gear, the gear engages and the lever stays down and doesn't return to that mid point ready for the shift into second, same if i go into second it'll just say popped up and not return to the center, any ideas of the culprit? thanks all!

Have you tried the Honda Twins site?

I did some digging on here and other sites and it seems the culprit may be the gearshift return spring, I ordered the part now I'm just wondering how exactly to install it

I have the same problem. Turns out I was missing the washer behind the clutch basket. The gearshift return spring could be your problem too. I have one I'll sell u if you can't find one. Anyway, to install, just remove the clutch housing and take the clutch basket off. The gear return spring is right there.

I actually found a NOS one on eBay for 5 bucks, but thanks though cause I lucked out on that one, no one makes them anymore and I didn't know if they were model specific or universal. I hope I don't need the washer, I just assumed it was the spring, but we'll see. Install seems easy enough so I'll try and tackle it once the part comes in and post my results, thanks for the help!

So i set out today with some WD40 and a ratchet set trying to luck out and poke around a hope for an easy fix for something i looked over. It turns out that the bracket the rear set was attached to was slightly bent, i took it off, hammered it straight, lubed it up and voila the shifter pops right back into the center like its supposed to!

I sat on the bike and went to run it through the first few gears..... :-\ I shift into first no problem, try to shift up into second and theres now another problem, when i shift up it doesn't seem to find the gear, like the shift arm goes way up but doesn't pop into gear. Any ideas?

P.S. I'm convinced my bike hates me lol  >:(
