Hey, while I have your attn..

Anyone tell me what this little speaker lookin thing is?

Come on now! Seriously that is a microphone!  You can speak into it without being plugged into the bike and it will echo loudly!

Hahahaha..

I would *almost* believe that.

First thought was it was some kind of speed warning sensor or something.

That's a fetzer valve.  Get me some ball bearings and some three-in-one oil.  Better make that Quaker State.  (See Fletch)

It's a good piece of equiptment,it helps keep people from turning in front of you because you forgot to turn off your directional.

Remember....  this ain't my first go round with a wrench. First bike yes, but plenty of years turning wrenches. That and a General Class Amateur Radio Operator and a very experienced musician. Hard to fool me with microphone jokes!  haha

:-P

Got my rear tank mount fabbed up this evening. It's not pretty but it will function. Because I'm using that CX tank (or so I think from the looking 'round I've done") the mounts are all different. The front is too wide for the mounts (going to get some 1 1/2" half-cut pipe for the front and weld it in to extend them) and the rear bracket came out over the battery area, so I cut that sucker off. I'm going to weld a bolt (or two, haven't decided yet) to the bottom of the tank on the plate the bracket was originally welded to and make a bolt/wingut combo for the bottom for easy removal...  It's essentially just a box shape made of 12 gauge plate steel with holes in it that I've bent to the correct height. I'll have rubber between the tank and the mount for flexibility. I made it just tall enough to keep the tank off the frame, and I plan to put some foam there on the sides/edges for extra support. I'll get pics when it's less ghetto looking.

Side note: A buddy of mine wants me to build the other frame I have for him. Only problem is the other frame didn't come with a title. So, I'm not sure how to go about that. Technically it is vintage, so I'm curious if we could just use a bill of sale and he could get a title that way with a motor vehicle VIN inspection. Kansas doesn't say much about that on their website, so it's clear as mud what I should do.

Hey looky there!!! That didn't last one hour on my bike when I got it back in April 2000. When I was test riding it and first hit a turn signal......said to myself "Oh hell no!!!!". I got home and clipped it off and pitched it. Guess I shoulda kept it to sell . Seems there are folks out there that like them. I know it's safety & all or it's original equipment that came with the bike but not my cup of tea!

I'll have to see what noise it makes before I decide. I could see myself being the kind of rider to leave my blinker on..

So, this happened..

Got the bearing numbers off the crank. All green from the factory. Yay for simplicity! I'll plastigauge to be sure.

I am not going to touch the transmission stuff. It looks good and I am certain I will F it up heartily. The rest I can handle. Primary chain actually looks really good.

Work work work!

Bearings are tighter than I was expecting.

I may leave the rods alone and just replace the crank bearings for peace of mind with stock (all green from factory)

Unless there's noticeable wear on them, many members reuse the bearings. As long as they are replaced to their original location. Your call.

One of them's got a decent scratch in it and I do see some wear in the top ones especially. The bottom ones are not so bad, oddly. Could I just replace the top halves?

I'd replace the entire set that is damaged, top and bottom. If it's not cost prohibitive, replace them all if there's wear.

yeah, I probably will. Cost isn't really a big factor - it will only lengthen the amount of time it takes for the rebuild as a function of how much money I can spend and when... I'll be sad if I can't finish it before the riding season is kaput...but at the same time I want to do it right the first time around, so I'm not in a hurry either. Rather do it right than quick.

Best (cheapest) place to get new primary chains? I'm getting a fair amount of stuff from DCC and Vintagecb750.com. not sure if DCC has it (haven't looked)

This may not belong here but I thought I'd share this anyway, as it pertains to this thread..

Got my walking papers today.

Just started working for this company three months ago who has been keeping my resume for a year because the general manager liked it. They finally hire me only to have one of their major contracts have issues causing them to lay off a bunch of guys, myself included.

So That's gonna slow down the bike project for sure. I still have quite a bit I can do as far as cleaning/painting goes but parts purchases will be at a stand-still until I can become gainfully employed again.

I did manage to clean up the fenders and spray them just now. I'd sand-blasted them a while back to prep them for being painted and decided to hit them with Rustoleum truck bed liner. Looks good so far. had one goof on the rear fender but I think I got it covered okay.

That sucks bud but hang in there. Are you missing any parts? I can check my stash or you can see my for sale thread. If I have anything you may be able to use let me know. I send as to you for free to help the build continue. I could check the K0 engine lower I have for any internals you may need.

Thanks Tews. I'm not sure. I think I've got just about everything I need that I don't need to buy new. The wiring harnesses in both bikes were in terrible shape so I was just going to buy a new stock one at some point. Same thing for most of the electrics..they looked pretty nasty, some of them.

As far as engine parts go, it's complete except for the pistons which I am going to replace as the originals were quite worn, most likely the crank bearings, seals, and sprocket (I need a new chain and was advised probably back at page 1 that I need to replace the sprockets as well as the chain)

Thanks again, and I'll let you know if I come across anything.

You guys are good dudes. Thanks. I've got some unemployment I can draw on for a while, so that helps.

I need to spend the morning cleaning the garage tomorrow. Amazing how something as small as a bike can create such a huge mess. I need to organize my parts piles better. I've been bagging, labeling and then throwing everything into a big pile.

Now that my money flow is changing I'm rethinking some of my plans. The bearings checked out tight and while a couple of the uppers have some side wear, I don't think they would be a danger if I ran them. I really think the primary chains look tight too. Maybe I'll do a vid and get your opinion. I could just do a bore/hone/new pistons/rings and leave the bottom end be except for a new cam chain and tensioner. The transmission components all look great, too.

On my 550 build I'm doing right now I left everything on the lower end the same. My buddy who is a former mechanic checked it all out and said I was good to go. Of course I changed the seals. The top end is a different story. Big bore in a small engine.
