Any one in Calgary willing to cure an ignorant?
« on: May 23, 2005, 10:59:22 AM »
Hey,

Kinda feel weird asking this but I need to tune and clean up my bike (74 cb550k) and don't really have a clue where to start. I have a Clymer for that year but I don't want to do it unsupervised, (nothing worse than trying to do the right thing and blowing it).

I would prefer not to take it too a shop, due too labour rates out here and the fact that the more cash I give to someone else the less gas money I have :P.

Always willing to bring a case of beer (or other preferred beverage if the case be), seems a good price for labour if I'm doing it and someone else is telling me what wrench to pull.

Thanks and looking forward to a response.

I'm not in Calgary, but for those who might be, knowing what the running condition of your bike is in now would be a great help.  Pictures?  What is the goal?

Well I'd like to more or less restore it. Nothing fancy just a solid dependable bike. Kinda feelin' ignorant when it comes to these things. No real education relating to them, so I thought I'd enquire.

Running condition is good I would assume. I mean it runs now, and gets me to where I want to go, but it has a cam chain rattle and is leaking from some gaskets (carbs and cylender head). Ummm... I think I should repack the the exaust too... but before I do I'd like an informed opinion about it. Paint and metal work I can do or have done so I'm not all that worried about that. Just worried that when I attempt the technical mechanical work that I'm gonna blow it (and my motor).

Ummm.. yea that's it I think I can post pics as needed if you would like.

 Ok I'm out,

Hi Millhouse,

I'm not in Calgary, but I do know someone that moved from there that once owned a Norton Commado.

He did a full restoration while living in Cowtown, and I'm sure he would have some contacts that may be
of help. Let me enquire and I'll get back to you.

Cheers,
Lou, in Cold Lake.

Hey Millhouse

I've established contact with my buddy that used to live in Calgary.
He is looking into a couple of people that may be able to help you.
As well, I have an e-mail address somewhere of a fellow that owns a SOHC 750.
I have to do some digging, just give me a couple of days.

Right now I'm in Airdrie working at Trans Canada Turbines.....not much time to do
anything esle, otherwise I'd drop in for a visit.

Keep in touch. I'll have that info soon.
Lou.

Well I thank you for your enthusiasm.

Most wouldn't inconvienence themselves over something like this(at least my buddies wouldn't :P).

Airdre wouldn't be all that long a haul out of my way, I'm always looking for an excuse to get on the bike.

Contacts in the city would be nice too. I'm not sure if I can trust this thing going too far too fast just yet. Although I have been to sylvan lake and back with it.

Looking forward to hearing back from ya,

 Millhouse

Hi Millhouse,

I've just talked to an old friend in Calgary. He knows someone that should be able to help you out.

I've sent your e-mail address to him. His name is Richard and will be sending you an e-mail soon.

This fellow's friend used to be the Shop Foreman at Blackfoot Cycle, now retired and working part time there.

My schedule is quite heavy this week, and it appears I might be coming back sometime in August. Maybe then.

Cheers,
Lou

Hi Millhouse,

I'm back in Cold Lake now, and I just heard my buddy was boarding an airplane today for points unknown.
I don't know when he's back, so just be patient. He's a travelling salesman.....Industrial Valves. I'll call him
when I get a chance and see when he'll be back in town.

I may be back in Airdrie sometime in August. I'll get in touch with you if I get the call to go.

Cheers,
Lou.
