Oil pressure light question
« on: June 28, 2014, 02:55:28 PM »
Hi Folks,

When my bike has been sitting for a while and I turn on the ignition key I only get the green neutral light turning on, not the oil pressure light (this is prior to starting the motor).

After I ride for while, when I hit the kill switch and the motor dies the oil pressure light comes on. Any ideas what would cause the oil pressure light not to turn as soon as I turn the ignition to the on position? Are these symptoms of a bad sensor, or bad wiring to the sensor? Any thoughts appreciated. I'm worried that the warning light might not come on when needed in an emergency.

Thanks
Tas.

I would jiggle (technical term!) the wiring and the bulb housing to see if it comes on when you first switch it on. Could be a loose connection or corrosion that connects with the vibration of the bike. If that doesn't work I would suspect the pressure sensor.

I had a similar issue with my project bike. The light wasn't coming on at all. I sent 12 volts directly to the bulb to verify the led was working. I checked the continuity of the wire and it was good. Finally I took the wire off the oil pressure switch and ground it to the frame and saw the led light up. The only thing left was the sending unit. I got one off ebay and it solved the problem.

Clean the contact at the sending unit.

Hi folks,

I just wanted to close this thread out and let people know it was in fact the oil pressure sensor that was the problem. I bought a replacement on Ebay and swapped it out. Everything works as it should. Glad it wasn't a broken wire since tracing that down might have been a pain.

Thanks for the tips.

Most of the 500/550s will have their oilpressureswitches replaced sooner or later.
