1974 honda xl100 no spark
« on: July 07, 2014, 01:15:35 PM »
I bought a none running xl100, got it running took the tank off for a week to fix some pinholes put it back on and now I don't have spark. I have a new charged battery, new coil and condenser but still can't get it to spark again. I can touch the points with a screw driver and get spark from them. Any ideas on what to check next? The screws on the side engine cover are seized and stripped so I've gotta figure out how to get them out to check timing but I think it should be good since it ran good last week

Hi there,
I can try to help but being there in person would be much easier.
If you have spark at the points then that means your coil more than likely has good primary windings, now the secondary windings is the winding that gives the high voltage to the plug lead and plug cap.
Remove the plug cap and see if the plug lead (bared back a bit) can make a spark to the head when you are sparking the points with a screwdriver . The point gap needs to be open for this test and short the points with the screwdriver then remove the screwdriver to create the spark.
If you have no spark at the plug lead then you have a burnt out secondary winding in your coil, which means the coil is to be replaced.
I am assuming that the plug is ok and the plug cap is screwed deep onto the plug lead.
I hope this info helps.
Cheers,
Mick

Thanks for the advice. Somehow my points gap got messed up I must have left the adjustment screw loose and they closed just a bit but it's back running now
