LED Blinkers- Honda CB500 - Making Me Crazy!
« on: August 12, 2014, 05:12:14 AM »
Hi all,

I'm just finishing up my Honda CB500 Cafe Racer and have mounted LED blinkers in front and in the back.
The problem is HOW to get the crap to work!? Sorry for the language but I've spent several hours trying to figure
it out and reading on the internet. Doesn't make it easier since all are in english and that I'm not so good at the
electrical part.

To the problem.

When I turn ignition on: Both front blinkers light up. Those in the back only light up one at the time
when I use the turn signal switch (which is new) but they dont flash. I've change the relay to a
Electronic 1-100 W 3 prong non load sensitive relay and not using the stock ground cable. (should I?)

The bulb for the turn indicator has been removed. Have I messed up the wiring since both front blinkers
light up when ignition is on? I at least think I have done it correctly and colors match.

Someone with more knowlegde in the area that can bring some light to me?

Thanks in advance!
Tobias from Sweden

Ohh, and here is a Picture of the bike.

Sounds like you have picked up the wire for the front running lights. Also is the relay you have used an electronic type?  If it is a bimetal type you won't get it to flash without load on it.   Which LEDs won't provide. You must have a three pronged electronic type flasher can for LEDs to work.

Okey, hmm. I have to check that out. For the moment the signals are wired grey to grey and black to green (ground in the bucket). The relay is a electronic non load sensitive relay.

Also I read this below in another thread:

"I had these same turns on my cb500. Plug the yellow(or red) wire into the power feed (where the orange or blue wires came out of) and plug the black wire into a ground plug. You will also have to swap your blinker relay for a three prong electronic relay. There should be an unused ground spade plug hanging down behind the current relay.

If they are lighting then you have the turns wired correctly. If they don't flash it's because you have the wrong relay."

Do you have a test light? That's the easiest way to find which power feed in the bucket you need for the turns. Turn the blinker on and whichever plug makes the test light blink is the plug you want.

On my 1971 CB500, Orange is left turn. Blue is right turn. Here's an interactive wiring diagram if you need it:

Your front indicators should connect to either blue or orange (depending on side) for power and green for earth.  Also, make sure you have the wires around the right way on the relay, what letters or markings are there on the relay you are using?  There should be a letter next to each pin.  If you can give these to me, I can tell you which wire should go to each.  ;D

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your help so far. I have now wired the front indicators so that it works with the turn signal switch. Don't know
what I first did connecting them. Anyhow.... they still don't flash. It doesn't say anything on the relay as you can se in the pictures
below.

There's no real way to know the pin out without the packaging but here's how I have mine wired:

Ok, this should be the same as your flasher can.  The wiring should be 31-Green, 49-Black and 49a I think is green and white, can vary from bike to bike.  If it is wired this way and it still isn't flashing then try temporarily wiring a standard light into the circuit, if it then starts to flash you need a different flasher can, which I suspect to be the case.

Thanks!!!

I've tried with that exact wiring but it doesn't work unforunately. The only whey the signals light up (but don't flash) is when wired as this: 49a-Green, 49-Black and 31-Grey, just as on the stock relay. I think I will have to look for another relay. I tried with the original turn signal and the recommended wiring but it didn't flash och lit up.
