Redcoating Tank
« on: July 07, 2014, 05:31:20 AM »
I cleaned and prepped my tank very well(rust removal). Used acetone the last thing and let it dry completely. Shook up my redcoat and poured it in and started rotating for coverage. after about 10 min. i turned it up side down and drained everything I could back into can and let it sit overnight
upside down to drain. The redcoat set up in runs everywhere. It was 92 here(in florida) but I was in the garage. I don't know what happened and am I
going to have to strip again. Anyone that has used it befored, could you please give me some advice.

Sounds to me that you were rotating the tank too quickly while trying to get proper coverage. If you were able to seal the unused portion quickly, open it up, stir it up, then pour it in and try again.

I offer that advice from personal experience of installing RedKote over itself when I discovered I had some holes at the filler neck that I didn't get covered. But I did have some "runs" on the underside of the top...

Poured it in, let it "settle" a tad, then slowly started raising the tank to move the liner to other areas. I spent better of 20 minutes insuring good even coating.

Worst case, Katman, you can fill your tank with Acetone and peel it all right out, either now, or after re-attempting. I'd suggest the latter in case you're successful.

Rotate slowly...

Thanks, I'll may give it a try. Should I thin the second attempt. Says you can on the can with acetone, or will that bother the coat in the tank allready.
Again, thanks for you help.

I would not unless the remainder in the can has "skinned over" and you need to get it back to a proper consistency.

You don't essentially want to have a "thin" consistency anyway. The thickness of it is part of its benefit; to seal small holes, etc.

When I did mine I also spent a good 20 minutes sitting in a chair and very slowly rotating the tank making sure I hit all areas as evenly as possibly. I would rotate slightly and hold for 30 seconds then rotate slightly again. I also propped the tank up after I was done and let it run out of the petcock valve hole.

Okay, Redcoat didn't work. I went ahead and did a second coat. Sat down and rotated real slow for 25 min.
turned upside down to drain and it strung and sheeted and puddled in the bottom even upside down. It setting up before
it drains good. Now I have a mess and I guess I am going to have to strip it out.

Get 1 or 2 gallons of Acetone, pour it in, and swish it around. Acetone will dissolve the liner very quickly and you should be able to return to bare metal quickly and easily.

Before you try a new liner, make sure metal is VERY dry and pour in new liner, and rotate slowly, never allowing liner to "puddle" or "pool" and set up. A even, consistent thickness costing is what you want.

I pour in, hold tank upright, then work along the bottom, slightly tilted to one side, working forward. Then tilt to other side, working towards the back again. Then invert tank, and work the liner along the top, towards the filler neck.

Before you empty it, look inside and make sure you've gotten full coverage. If not, repeat rotation cycle. Make sure both petec drain holes are clear and the neck is also lined.

Okay,
I'm going to try it earlier in the morning next time(6ish). I'm here in florida and the humidity is stifling.
It really acted like it was setting up to fast. While the tank was upside down draining it came from the tunnel
to the cap hole as 1 sheet and set up.

After stripping with acetone, make sure you fully clean the inside with soap and water, a degreaser, etc. Then use a bit more acetone to "dehydrate" the tank, and then blow warm air.

Then try the liner again. It sounds as though the liner isn't bonding to the metal due to contamination on the metal surface.

Yea tank had been cleaned thoroughly,  evaporust, prep and etch, several rounds of acetone. Was really dry when I started. had a little flash rust
but I didn't think it would hurt.

If my memory serves me correct it is permissible to thin (dilute) redcoat with up to 10% acetone which is what I did three years ago on my K1 550.  Its still holding up well.  The dilution allows for better flow and helps prevent the puddling.  If your worried about thickness then do two thin coats.
