Rear view camera for your bike?

Hey want to get your collective opinion on how useful a rear view camera system for a motorcycle would be. The unit would be very easy to install and would use wifi to connect to your smart phone (apple or android. Camera would have a 170° field of view. It would also have a mount and power source for your phone. So basically it would be like a live-view rear view mirror. The idea is to cover your blind spots. Cool? Dumb? Dumb as hell?

I tend to subscribe to the "keep it simple" school of thought. I have two "live" rear view mirrors, and a snap of the head to one side or the other covers blind spots. Blind spots aren't much of an issue for me though, I tend to keep a running inventory of vehicles around me, especially those approaching from behind and/or the side. I've got enough to worry about without my "rear view" going blank for whatever reason. Too many things to go wrong.

But that's just me...  :)

These are great comments, I guess sometimes I feel a little blind with a full helmet on. One other positive is that the app can record video. Could be handy in case of an accident (unless it was your fault!)

Now that's a whole different topic altogether. I'm a big fan of "dash cams", and a rear view cam would be a good supplement to a dash cam. I've given the wife instructions to insist that the law enforcement agency with jurisdiction to secure my dash cam in the event I am ever involved in a crash (doing my absolute best to prevent that though).  8)

Eventually the app will be able to record front and back streams simultaneously (while only showing the rear), but for now most phones can't process that much data

you've got enough going on all around you to keep an eye on to have yet another 'distraction'.
check your mirrors as you come to a stop, and until the car behind you stops. 
yes, a rear mounted cam for accident purposes would be beneficial, but dont have it on display to draw you away from scanning when you should be....

If I'm running a dash cam I will start the camera before I roll and only check it when I've stopped.

About two years ago, I saw a really nice Harley and the guy had a rear cam on there. The screen was about the size of a GPS. He admitted it was cool, bit not that useful.

I have my first auto with a backup cam. Useful but only in addition to standard mirrors and window views. I wondered if they could replace rear view mirrors, etc. Unless there are better ones than I have, the resolution can't beat a mirror and it seems to be prone to what I call flare bleeding. If there is a bright light source behind you (afternoon sun, headlights) it's pretty useless.
