The worst thing you had in your helmet
« on: July 09, 2014, 10:30:17 AM »
I just remembered the night we spent outside with my wife, sleeping alongside the motorcycle - it was a nice night somewhere in Germany and we did not feel like messing with a tent - and in the morning she had two slugs in her helmet.

Of course being the good husband I am, I cleaned that out really good.

And of course being a smart man, I told her many, many years later :)

Besides that, I had several yellow jackets to fly in on me, but that's about it.

What was the worst thing you found in your helmet or caught in your helmet while riding?

I was having lunch at a local farmer's market one day... helmet sat on the ground next to me. I'm talking to the new friend I made (Harley XR1200), and I go to put on my helmet.

All is fine and dandy until I kick Rhonda over and JUST after I put it down to first gear, I feel a tickling around my right ear. I push on the side of my helmet, thinking it's my hair in my ear or something. Then it tickles faster. NOPE! Luckily my sidestand was still down, or else I would have dropped the bike after it stalled when I threw the helmet off my head with both hands.

Guess what was crawling around my ear...?

An earwig.

I have had a bee hit my bubble at around 100KPH... I couldn't see through the splatter and had to pull over. Scary stuff. My wife, when she was younger, got hit by a bee in the face wearing a half-helmet, and it stung her.

Does almost count?
Had a 3' long 2x4 kicked up by a truck tire come about 6" away from my helmet.
I had to do a little head bob to the left to avoid it.

I had a contact lens pop out and lay on my cheek till about 6 ft before I could stop. With 20x475 vision it made for a difficult 120mile ride home that night.
I wrecked into a cornfield one morning and had a cornstalk sticking out the front after the visor broke. It was a little awkward feeling.

Nothing in the helmet yet but once I was riding with my oldest son who at that time had a 71 cb350 twin and he was wearing shorts. I noticed that I couldn't see him in my mirrors so I turned around to see what was up, he was along side the road hopping up and down looking like he was swatting at his groin area ...... he had a big ole bumble bee fly up his shorts and was stinging the daylights out of him. He has worn pants when riding from that day on.  ;D

Was out trail riding with some mates many years ago. We stopped for a break (for the nico addicts), took our helmets off and put them on the ground. With our rest over we took off when suddenly two of our companions came to a screeching stop, dropped their bikes on the ground and started ripping at their helmets. Once they had them off it was easy to see the cause - hundreds of ants had made a home in their lids.
Another time was trail riding with the missus in front riding point. Not a good thing to do early in the morning as spider webs are every where. The wife, as others above, came to a screeching stop - literally. Dropping her bike and screaming "get it off!!". I looked at her to see that she had a humungous Orb Weaver hanging over the front of her helmet peak looking her square in the eye. She's an arachnophobe.
I flicked it away and from then on I always rode in front, in the bush.

The funniest I experienced was a June bug that nailed me in the shoulder/neck one evening, easy to feel though a leather jacket. After a minute or so I could feel the bugger crawling up my face to just under my left eye where I assume he expired. Needless to say it didn't take long to brake to a stop and get the helmet off. My wife caught a glimpse of it before I grabbed him. Thirty years later we still laugh about it.  ;D

I had a very pissed off wasp caught in my chin strap one day.  It got caught just at the entry to a chicane so I was trying my best to ignore the pain as I was rounding the corner with one hand on the bars and the other swatting furiously at at my neck.  I had to pull up and adjust the chin strap a few minutes later to accommodate the swelling under my jaw.  Pissed me off, but that little #$%*er died ;D.

Many moons ago, my (now thankfully ex) GF asked to try on my Shoei. I let her.

That was undoubtedly the worst thing I had in my helmet.

This reminded me of our cat that would bring in live lizards. One night getting ready to go to bed I saw one race across the top of her pillow. No way I was going to mention it.  I told my wife years after we moved out of the house.
thanks, Mark

I had a very similar occurrence while riding my honda ATV on back roads wearing shorts. Something got in and stung my "bag".  I was punching myself in the crotch while riding down the road. It was awful but after a few days, the swelling went down and I was fine.

In my helmet?  The worst I had was ants. Just regular little ohio ants. But they tickled and made my head itch so badly I nearly crashed. I couldn't get that helmet off quick enough. There was about a dozen of them in there. I'm itching just thinking about it. I don't set my helmet in the grass any more and I look inside before I don it. No problems since.

During college, I was riding home the next morning from a particularly drunken party the night before. Doing about 50 on a country road. The remnants of booze and food came up so quickly that I didn't even have time to lift the visor let alone slow down. Super gross. Not a good memory. I'd take a bee over barf any day of the week. No helmet law back then -- needless to say I rode home without the helmet on.

I was heading down to the Georges river,  Revesby in NSW with a mate of mine, I was on my GPX750 with my wife on the back and Joe was on his Z1000, between Peakhurst and Revesby there is 5 minutes of winding mountain road then you come down to the river. I had gotten about 500 meters in front of Joe which is about 2 corners ahead when a bloody Hornet flew inside the left side of my helmet and bit my ear, before i had time to think about it i had ripped off my helmet and thrown it onto the side of the road, I continued on as I was in traffic and needed to look for a safe place to turn around. After turning around and going back to get my helmet,  Joe was standing on the side of the road next to my helmet looking over the edge to try and see if he could see me, he was clearly freaking out, that look turned to completely  puzzled when he saw me coming from the other direction, at this point he's standing next to my helmet scratching his head in a state of confusion, as soon as i showed him my ear he understood, but up until then the poor bloke thought i had ridden off the side of the mountain..   Hornets and ears don't match... :o

A few years ago I was out cycling on my lunch hour when a bee flew into one of the slots on the top of my helmet.  Before I knew what was happening, that bugger stung me.  I pulled right over and got the helmet off quickly, but it was too late and the bee had done it's damage.  I had the absolute worst headache for the rest of the day - easily 5-10 times worse than any headache that I had ever had in the past.
