headlamp not working after replacing w/ H4 on '77 cb750
« on: July 09, 2014, 08:44:16 PM »
so about 6 weeks ago I got merged into on my '77 cb750F and had to lay her down. luckily I have engine guards so damage actually turned out to be minimal, but I did need to replace the headlamp (including housing and retaining rings) and ear mounts. i figured while I was in there I'd replace the old sealed beam unit with a Hella H4 (55/60 W bulb). The problem is when I turn on the bike the headlamp does't illuminate. I'm no electrical engineer but the turn signals and turn signal horn light up and blink just fine, according to my clymer they should share the same power circuit (this is something im far from being positive about though). I bought two bulbs and neither of them light up. Ive briefly checked the wiring connections and ground but everything seemed to be in place and I didnt notice anything i thought was unusual.

I have a feeling that there is something simple that i am missing here. can anyone suggest a promising place to start investigating? is it possible that the fall jostled a component that i'm oblivious of? or can anyone point me in the direction of a troubleshooting guide?

much appreciated

Wobbly is right -- you may find this only after tracing which wires should have power and comparing that to which wires do have power.

But you didn't mention fuse.  The headlight has a separate fuse.
