Has anyone had this problem at their house before and what is the best and safest way to get these critters out of the attic.

Thermonuclear annihilation!

Short of that, you might need to put up some "bat houses" near the area where they are entering the attic. Ideally you can get them to move out before sealing up their point of entry. Wouldn't want to seal them in and have them die off up there only to start stinkin up the joint even worse! (if that's possible...)

You need to find how they are getting in and note they can come in thru very small holes. Plug the hole(s) is your only self defense as we can no longer buy any effective fumigants as it is illegal to kill the little buggers.

The Orkin and Terminex of the world offer services, don't know what they use.

It can be memorable family entertainment when they find their way into the living area!

I dealt with this recently.  A tarp was duct taped over the area where the bats entered, seal it on the top but not the bottom.  The bats will find there way out at dusk when they go out to feed but will not be able to get back in.
After a day or two, when the bats were known to be out, the tarp was removed and the small gap was caulked up.

Just read an article recently where our bats in the US are under a great deal of pressure right now with a fungus they get on their nose called "White Nose Syndrome". Estimates are that 5- 7 million have already died. They do perform a valuable service in the wild.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_nose_syndrome

Hey Steve. Not a hijack but the trip ended a little early and in a very unfortunate way. My Son and his girlfriend were also on the trip with the "gang". His girlfriends Father was killed in a fiery head on crash on a Grand Rapids area highway by a 32 year old lady who intentionally did a u turn to drive the wrong way against traffic. Why the Hell do people do this kind of thing ??  Very sad indeed. http://woodtv.com/2014/07/13/wrong-way-crash-victim-a-great-man/

Normally nowadays, one-way traps are used. House gets sealed up, exit only wire trap is installed, and when they fly out, they cannot re-enter. Erecting some bathhouses nearby is a good idea anyway. North side of trees, at least 10' off the ground. Having bats about is handy, as they consume the evening Mosquitos. But not in the house...

Actually, I believe they should face southeast (warmth of morning sun) and at least 15' up with 20-25' of free space around them. Painted dark color in more northern climes and light colored in more southern climes.

Can you use synthetic bugs?
