Came across this, and thought some others might also benefit from the read, and enjoy the explanation.

its expensive hipster junk..
.it dont do anything better then a stock system..
you CANT boost a generator..vho are build as veak as posssibel..but doing its job fine.
.im working at a elektro shop..doing 10-50 mc stators/rotors at year..the main fail are worn copper viring shorting to frame..spec in 750 oilfilled generator..the oil breake down the vires and laucker...but they can easy be rebuild to stock..or a bit better..but not mutch..but still most stators/rotors regifires dont fail ..its bad  oxyding viring..and vrong montage..vho make the most problems

but how can a newbee learn to vire..by baying expensive super parts..who also need to be vired korrekt up..its just as hard as renovate the old parts ..and re fit it...i think 90% of all thanged parts are fine to start at..and the bikes have the same problems after peapel have vasted lot of money..
find the one who can do this bikes..and its not the cafee/parts  sells menn..but some who drives them daily..and are in /throug the problems
i kan not speak english/but trying!!

Do you wind rotors and stators for living?

My high school was high voltage electroengineering and one of the projects we had to do was to calculate and wind coils for a transformer - they would not let us do motors, too complicated ;)

Stryn.  Curious - which of the several componets cited to in the article are "hipster junk?"

I presume he's referring to the Motogadget m-unit and a beefier stator. The other components are pretty much undisputed quality improvements.

As for Joe, he is a wiring god and really knows his stuff, and he is extremely helpful to people who just call him for advice.

hey im maskinist at the elektro firm..and do not the calkusions on vire thiknes and numbers of vindings..and the ohm in the finish set..
but the old one..the boss..can easy do calkusions to thange volts autput..on dynamoes and generators..but often are there not "meat=metall in the stator to put more copper in..and get power instead of heat..

ve do 3 fase industri engines..and big ankers  vith komutators for cnc machines vith variabel rpm,,so both ac and dc..but also some veteran stuff..ve are the only in scandinavia..in this special produktion for renovating of this engines..have also some small new series speciel engines vith heigh power/small seitse

can not se a diode ban be better then an other diode refigiator in the system...so whu bying this expensive..hipster things..when the system works just as good as the old unit..this old units are not in high load..they can do the duppel load vith no problen..and a new komponent vill not improve the system..the point is...its overkill most of the stuff..the standart komponents give the same effekt in watt..it can not be inproved...but if it are for good looks..it vork...it looks good..i must admit that

Stryn - this is an extremely myopic view. If I were to follow your logic, then you are saying that once a system is invented, then no further enhancements or technical change should occur. That's absurd.

A prime example is the fact the choose to ride and maintain a 40 year old motorcycle, but, manufacturers still create fuel injected, electronically controlled variable vale timed, multi-cam, ABS and multi-piston, free floating calipered bikes that sell like hot cakes! Are all these bikes "expensive hipster junk"? No, they are evolution of technology.

I agree, the original components on the SOHC worked, some aspects worked well and still do. Hence, their enduring popularity and reliability. Yet, many of these components are either very hard to come by, difficult to "refresh" or simply not of a new owners choosing. That neither makes them inadequate, or hipster junk.

But I will point out specially, that you are incorrect when you say, "they can do anything better than stock". For a fact, the M-Unit does and can, provide functionality not even possible on the stock system. Further, it includes features not found on the original bike, which further enhance the bike.

If you choose not to use these, that's great. But if others do, then have a bit more respect than to opine in your negative and derisive tone. After all, the title of the thread was specifically calling out to "Newbies" on some fundamentals of electrical. You obviously aren't one, so why bother to even read or respond?

My view is this: whatever new components that enable, or encourage new, less experienced owners to adopt motorcycling and rebuilding vintage bikes, all the better! The world (and this forum) benefits from more common membership, not less.

Don't you agree-

i have some laungish problems..so it are hard to get the point klearly..

this 3 fase generator type gives0.13 kw bei 2000 rpm..ca 2 amp 14 volt...ca its not presise angabe..my point are that no modern retifiger can enprove this..the old type are just as effektive as the nev you like to bay ...så im not saing ad the nev are bad...but i say it not better then a old  prober vorking retifier..
.a diode just make power goes one vay..it vill never thange..not even if i bay a new unit. there are no perform improvement... my point are that many mods..not give that ekstra safty/performance , not to stand at road side vith a dead bike..
.and the money are better given aut to bay a nev viring ..a new 12 volt 12 ah battery and hold most stock komponents as possibel..and bay a multimeter to thek before thange/trow old komponents aut .
im just say that the stock works best...and you say that" cafe sells men" stuff" are best..its the vay i see this thread..im actuly drives my bike for 4 years in scandinavia clima..with no problems..have made small upgrades like" flat fuse" konversion..and steel brandet brake lines..new are not alvays bad..
konklusion are the copper viring in stator can only give the standart effekt...and even a golden retifier/regulator can not improve the autput..its a nature low...thats the short one....kawasaki put a permanent magenet in..and regulated elektronic the volts...and shorted the stator virings to regulate..it gave a higer autput. but vas a onn/off regulating.but hondas vas a smarter/viser vay to do it..

im just try to say...dont bay the most expensive fancy..if a standart komponent do it as vell..thek the marked...and dont belive all they says..i like improvements
thats vay i bayed a cbx 1000..its better then my cb 550...have all the stuff i miss..on the old /other bike...they are both 1978...so are both new/old..but still ..i like both bikes..but for differend things..one day i vill have a new bike...just for the feeling of a komplet new bike...

there are many vays to make the elektric..and it often ends in a kompromis..with some old mixed vith nev parts..so ve are both in the ekstremes..and realety are  somhvere between
