knee deep in my 1st carb rebuild (78 cb550 pics)
« on: July 11, 2014, 12:52:31 PM »
OK. On summer holidays, wife away, 2 brown pops in and.......

Something LQQks different????

This is my 1st CB,  and my 1st time ever tearing into a bike......  I read up and watched a few great vids about cleaning/rebuilding your carbs........  What you are looking at are 78 CB 550k carbs....

Question......  Why is carb #3 different from the others?

be careful not to mix up the parts.  if it came out of a carb, put it back in that same one.

its different because its the slave carb, meaning, all other carbs in the rack are tuned to match that one, and it should be #2, looking left to right, while sitting on the bike

The #3 you said is actually carb #2 and that is the preset which the other 3 needs to follow when you synch the carbs

My bad on the numbering ( learning a bunch today :) I have individual containers for all 4 carbs....

2nd question; how do I remove the "slow  jet" ? Its round in shape and didn't want to force  anything out without really knowing how too.......  Do I need to "bang" it out?

The slow jet is pressed in. You can use pliers to twist, and pull it out. Use a shop rag, or similar between the jet, and pliers to keep from marring the soft brass.

DO NOT pound directly on the jet when reinstalling. It WILL damage the jet. Use a soft piece of wood to buffer to blows.

Why in the world did you remove these parts (in the photo)? They never ever need servicing.

gaskets and o-rings will probably work...don't use the brass.   Plenty of Honda dealerships online for oem stuff.

I can't leave anything alone,  wanted to learn how to tear them down and too see what condition they were in

It's a worthwhile endeavor to tear those carbs apart - you learn a lot and become comfortable enough that the intimidation factor goes away.

Carbs are the key  ;D

Just be gentle - that old metal cracks easily. An air compressor is invaluable during the cleaning process. So are replacement screws for the float bowls and top caps. I have a bag of spares I keep on hand.

Got her out! I was just being too "gentle" with them...  Worried I was doing something wrong..

Is there anything else that needs to come out before cleaning / dipping the metal parts ??

How do I remove these ???

Also....When I removed all the parts I took a inventory of the parts pre/Carb and noticed that I was short 1 shim/washer & o-ring in #4 Carb, and 1 shim/washer in #2 Carb in the Idle mix screw ????

If you are refering to the idle mixture screw washer, and o-ring. They are likely still stuck up in the carb body. You can use a small pic to dig them out.

When reinstalling the correct order is spring, washer, o-ring .
The washer protects the o-ring from being cut by the spring.

The original brass pieces are likely to be in good condition still.
The gaskets, and o-rings in those keyster kits will be fine.
