750 F2 front sprocket
« on: July 11, 2014, 02:46:58 PM »
I know this is a dumb question and one I should know, I've also searched and couldn't find the answer (wrong keywords maybe?) and the question is what way should the front sprocket be facing when installed on the output shaft of an F2? Should the shouldered side of the sprocket be facing out (top pic) or should the smooth side be facing out (bottom pic)? I'm being paranoid about this because I discovered last weekend that I had lost the clip to the masterlink and the masterlink itself had worked itself 1/3 of the way out of the chain. On the trip to Tennessee my wife and I made last week I heard a strange noise at the end of our ride on our last day there but couldn't pinpoint it, well that link working itself out was the cause of that noise with the link grazing the engine case. That spooked me because that meant my wife and I were on the verge of that link wedging itself and locking the rear wheel up on that last day of our trip. New front and rear sprocket has arrived and new 630 chain should be here soon this time with a rivet link and I just want to make sure I have everything right.

I say what matters is if the sprocket lines up with the rear sprocket.  Technically either way will not make a difference but the chain should not bend axially.

For the connecting link, you could wire it the race style for peace of mind.

Thanks for the input. I'll check sprocket alignment before putting new chain on to make sure. Right now I'm pissed because I figured the chain would be here by this weekend, even payed extra for 2 day delivery to make sure but I just checked my order status and it's still be processed. WTF!! If I knew they were going to drag their feet processing it I would've opted for regular ground delivery. Oh well that gives me plenty of time to replace the rear wheel bearings.

Shoulder facing in, smooth side out. I've lost a clip link due to the sprocket being installed wrong, scary stuff. Thankfully 630 chains are built tough.
