It seems it would be easier to cap the threaded outlet and drill for the bolt on petcock I have on the black tank.  Bad idea?

 I have the correct part number at home. That makes searching easier sometimes. I'll post it later.
 What's the top of your tank look like? I want to make sure it's a '76 K tank and not an F model or a '77-78 tank. Those petcocks are different yet again.

Haha Scott, tell me what you really think!

The top and all other dimensions are identical to the black (cb500) tank from 1971-1973.  Other than the petcock, the fit on the bike is the same too.

 And of course the pics I have obscure the part number. That old packaging is probably out in the garage somewhere, in a parts box, with the old petcock in it. I'll keep looking for the whole number.
 I've found them on eBay.

Does anyone know the part number for this thing?  Or even which model and year it corresponds to?  I'm having no luck finding them online.

Jimmy, I have ordered a cheap Kawasaki one - you never know right???

I'd still like to find a Honda one if I can though...

Cafe Racer Fan; when I google the part number you suggest I get a single outlet petcock?  I require either a dual outlet petcock, or to go messing about with tees.  I've got my fingers crossed that I can make this Kawa one work...

It's the dual outlet model for the 1975-76 CB550 -- I have purchased a couple from this vendor.  He lists one about every 2 weeks.  Always the same price -- approx. $100 with shipping.

That number actually covers both single and dual outlet. You can take the single out and drill it and press the barb in for dual outlet.

think it vill hit the carburettor..have made some mods..and the Space under the tank is small..real hard to fix somthing..specily on 400 and 550

DrATV carries an inexpensive inline shutoff valve if you care to fashion an inline shutoff/petcock for your application. It will handle fuel without complaint. FunJimmy did a bit of lathe work to use the previous petcock as a compression fitting for putting a barb on his tank to then feed the inline shutoff valve.

Jimmy,  I can confirm that the KZ version arrived over the weekend and is just slightly too large to thread onto the bung.

Very close though, and I appreciate the suggestion.

For now, both tanks are off the bike for painting anyway.

It's not so much that I'm a cheap ass (I really am but, having said that, I've spent far more on this bike than it's worth), but I'm under the impression that this petcock design was discontinued quickly as it is a piece of junk???

It's not a "piece of junk", the unique cone shaped valve insert is susceptible to damage if a chunk of grit/rust/crud gets into it, scoring the plastic cone and causing a slight (but ungood) leak. If your gas is clean, tank isn't rusty, and the filter sock is good this should not happen. I have this type on a couple of tanks, have never had a problem. There are single and dual nipple versions, I don't know why a single PN would cover both.
The bung threads are different sized from what the 4-hole rubber seal type petcocks fit. I don't know if any other petcock would be usable.
