Header wrap
« on: July 13, 2014, 11:32:11 AM »
Kind of a weird one I know, as everyone is probably against it. But My '77 550F has a pretty ugly chrome original header with rust at the top and rust at the bottom, muffler had a "Senkei 2005" replacement that had rusted the spark arrestor and plugged the back causing enough pressure to make the bike stall at idle.

My question is how much header wrap will I need to do all four pipes down to the collector and then about a foot or so past it?

I understand it will be pretty tight but I was thinking two 50' 1" rolls would make it easier to slip through the pipes close to the collector, then wrap around all four.

From what i remember, when you wrap it,you wrap each wrap half over the other piece.i imagine if you can measure your header, should get you close

50 or 100 foot? I'm thinking of going with the black DEi stuff from DCC.

Get the sealing spray, too.  Helps hold it in place.  The black spray keeps it from fading.

Holy crap. DEi's website sells the wrap for 35 bucks for a 50 foot roll. I'll buy from them direct. That's almost half the price as anywhere else!

So unfortunately they can't ship the silicon spray outside of the states. I'll have to see if I can buy it locally from Lordco or something.

I got mine off Amazon, and it was cheap.
Get the 2", as it suggests to overlap by an inch....1" with overlap might take you a few extra rolls.
Buy it in 1 roll, so there is no waste.  You'll need roughly 20' x3 for three headers, and 40'x1 for one long wrap from the exhaust, over the collector and all start wraps, all the way up the last unwrapped header for that seamless look.....

I read it was harder to get a tight bend like at the top of the headers with the 2".

But if it works I may just do that.

Does the amount of ties sound right? Two 4 packs, one for each top and bottom of the pipe (Less one for the bottom that will go around the rest near the bottom)
And a single 4 pack of 12mm 14" ties for the end of the collector and the bigginning and end of my muffler pipe (I'll get a pick in a little bit so you can see what I mean, my muffler is welded to a pipe that then gets clamped to the collector)

Obviously not pushed all the way on, not clamped, I still have the chrome cover for the collectors (Looks pretty good on there too, just a little pitted)

Still need to figure out a little thing to hold it to the center stand stop, or fab a new one all together (would look cleaner)

I believe the DEI site has a calculator to determine how much you need based on pipe diameter, length, overlap and wrap width.

I believe it will be between 70 and 90 feet.  I'll need 100 feet at the minimum either way as they only come in 15, 50 and 100 foot rolls.

My bike's PO had installed a Mac (I think) muffler on the stock headers and hadn't accounted for the center stand hitting the chain.  I ended up just putting two wide washers on the bolts that attach the center stand so when it is folded up the washers catch it before it can contact the chain.  Not the fanciest set-up but it seems to be working so far.  And the price/effort was pretty much right on.

Just redid mine. I think I used about 70 ft for these short pipes. Also soaked it in water first and then let it dry in the sun.

I bought 50' of the 2" ties and a can of silicone spray. I have to go back tomorrow for the other 50' I need. They only had one in stock.

Need some advice.  Should I scuff the chrome and paint it with VHT, let it cure, then wrap it? Or can I just use a rust inhibitor on  the little bit of rust I have on the top of the header and wrap it? I'm thinking paint to stop the rust completely, though curing on VHT is 7 days and this is kind of my daily as my dads 750 is having carb issues lol :P

Tempast - I just did mine. But instead of going right over the collector, I used black header paint on the collector and then ran the tape down to where the four header pipes meet it. That way you don't have a massive web of header tape down there. Just an idea - saves on the tape and saves on the massive wrapping down there. And looks better IMO. The header paint usually works pretty good down at that point, as it's not as hot at the collector.

Thanks but I want the wrap to look continuous from the top to the beginning of the muffler, but I need it to come off so I'll have to make two separate wraps. You'll see what I mean on the pic up a few posts with the pipe off the collector
